About film

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is a 1999 American found footage horror film written, directed and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. The film was produced by the Haxan Films production company.

The film relates the story of three student filmmakers (Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard) who disappeared while hiking in the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland in 1994 to film a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch.

The viewers are told the three were never seen or heard from again, although their video and sound equipment (along with most of the footage they shot) was discovered a year later and that this “recovered footage” is the film the viewer is watching.

The film received enormously positive reception from critics and went on to gross over US$248 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful independent movies of all time.

‘Prod / Ponder’ Presents Than Sok

You are invited to an artist talk with Than Sok. Than Sok has been invited to Ho Chi Minh City for one month for ‘Prod/Ponder’ – an artist-in-residency program as part of ‘Conscious Realities’. His artwork, ’To Give is to Receive I’ is currently on view as part of the exhibition ‘Conjuring Capital’.

Than Sok is an artist and performer from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Fascinated by spiritual ritual, its structures and meanings, wary of how contemporary social attitude is changing understandings of what it means to ‘believe’, Than Sok will unpack his artistic practice that encompasses installation, drawing, performance, video and sculpture. He will also share his experiences of the past month, working with the Khmer/Vietnamese community of Ho Chi Minh City, to finally conclude his presentation with a special performance!!

Trang Thanh Hien’s “Đáy sóng” exhibition is the complicated stories of a woman who makes art in which the pictures retell the story of a powerful woman who worships Buddhism. The pictures were painted on a special kind of paper: Nung An people’s phloem paper, which was made by the ethnic women and arranged unplannedly by the artist to become perfect creations.

The poems are also the melodic stories that express the feelings inside the women’s souls. Besides, clothes and other practice products are the other stories, it’s like a hobby that is very womanly. In the beginning, they were just the T-shirt made for the artist and her friends, however, the dresses, the ethnic bags made it a whole new story. It’s like the poetic inspirations for the endless creativity.

Featuring a number of new and recent works never before seen at the gallery, the exhibition brings together some of the gallery’s artists in unusual and unexpected encounters. Nguyen Manh Hung unveils a new painting that humorously retells a familiar fable while Ha Manh Thang shows landscapes that raise ideas about monumentality and doubt. Traditional Puppet of Asia: BUNRAKU Meets ASEAN

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a Bunraku exchange and performance program “Traditional Puppet of Asia: BUNRAKU Meets ASEAN” by six young leaders of BUNRAKU Company from Osaka, Japan, at Vietnam Puppet Theater in Hanoi on 30 August 2014.

Ranking with Noh and Kabuki as one of Japan’s foremost stage arts, the Ningyo Johruri Bunraku puppet theater (Bunraku) is a blend of sung narrative, instrumental accompaniment and puppet drama. The plots related in this new form of puppet theater derived from two principal sources: historical plays set in feudal times (Jidaimono) and contemporary dramas exploring the conflict between affairs of heart and social obligation(Sewamono). Ningyo Johruri had adopted its characteristic staging style by the mid eighteenth century with three puppeters, visible to the audience, manipulate large articulated puppets on the stage behind a waist high screen. From a projecting elevated platform (yuka), the narrator (tayu) recounts the action while a musician provides musical accompaniment on three-stringed spike lute (shamisen). To solely dubs all characters voice in a play, one tayu has to change different voices and intonations. Although the tayu “reads” from a scripted text, there is ample room for improvisation. Approximately 160 works out of the 700 plays written during the Edo period have remained in today’s repertory. Nowadays, the aesthetic qualities and dramatic content of the plays continue to appeal to modern audiences.

In 2013, to celebrate 40th anniversary of ASEAN Japan Friendship and Cooperation, Bunraku Puppet Theater, traditional puppet theater of Japan, was staged for the first time in South East Asia at Kuala Lumpur. It not only marked a historical first appearance in the region, but also paved a way to a new collaboration between Japan and ASEAN countries through traditional puppets.

This year 2014, young professionals of Bunraku Puppet Theater from Bunraku Company will tour to have joint-workshops, build network and exchange skill with local traditional puppet theater in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi.

Scene of “HINOMI YAGURA” from the story of “DATE MUSUME KOI NO HIGANOKO”

This story is based on the affairs which happened in Edo period, about 300 years ago. Oshichi, a daughter of greengrocer was upset late at night because she found out the place of the sword which her lover Kichisaburo lost. He was about to commit seppuku for this mismanagement. She wanted to tell it to him immediately but she couldn’t go out from the city centrum because all the gates were closed during the night. In Edo city (Tokyo, nowadays), gates around the city were closed and they were never opened till morning comes. Once closed, people couldn’t go through the gate. But gates were opened only when an alarm bells for a fire rang.

Oshichi had to go out from the city through the gate to see him! Then, she caught her eyes a watch tower (HinomiYagura) by chance. She went up straight the tower and sounded an alarm bell to open the gates. (Sounding an alarm bell when a fire doesn’t happen is also serious crime at that period).

Positive Mass in August

“Positive Mass”, and event inspired on an international event called Critical Mass. It is just a bicycle ride to promote cycling for all its positive reasons. Critical Mass is a cycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The ride was originally founded in 1992 in San Francisco. The purpose of Critical Mass is not usually formalized beyond the direct action of meeting at a set location and time and traveling as a group through city or town streets on bikes.

In Hanoi, Positive Mass (PM) is called “Đạp cho sướng”, literally meaning cycling for pleasure. Bikers meet on the last Friday of every month at St. Joseph Cathedral (Nhà thờ lớn) and travel around Hanoi following a prepared route with the ending point at the Cathedral. The first PM in Hanoi started in Oct 2012. Since Oct 2013 PM has been hold in HCMC, Thai Nguyen and Son La.

“Coppelia” will be performed with the choreography and the direction of famous Norwegian choreographer Johanne Jakhelln Constant, who had made productions of “the Nutcracker” and “Cinderella” huge successes.

Coppélia is a comic ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to the music of Léo Delibes, with libretto by Charles Nuitter. Nuitter’s libretto and mise-en-scène was based upon two stories by ETA Hoffmann: Der Sandmann (The Sandman), and Die Puppe (The Doll).

Coppélia, considered one of the greatest comic ballets of the 19th Century, has remained one of the best-loved classical works in the ballet repertory. Originally choreographed by Arthur St. Léon in 1870, restaged by Petipa in 1884, and revised by Cecchetti in 1894, it has been performed regularly since then. None of St. Léon’s original choreography remains in today’s productions, and although Acts I and II have retained his ideas and story, the nature of some of the roles has changed.

Sin Nombre (2009)

SIN NOMBRE is a 2009 U.S.-Mexican adventure thriller film written and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, about a Honduran girl trying to immigrate to the U.S.A, and a boy caught up in the violence of gang life who also needs to escape.

Filmed in Spanish, the film’s title means “Nameless”. It won several awards, including the prizes for directing and cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Rachel Getting Married (2008)

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED is a 2008 drama film directed by Jonathan Demme, and starring Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, Bill Irwin and Debra Winger. The film was released in the U.S. to select theaters on October 3, 2008.

The film opened the 65th Venice International Film Festival. The film also opened in Canada’s Toronto Film Festival on September 6, 2008. Hathaway received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the film.

In this event, we start the journey with hemp – the essential fabric in the life of a Hmong person. The meticulous process of hemp making will be demonstrated, from removing the bast fiber, carding, twining to weaving.

We invite you to tap on the rich artistic and spiritual world of the Hmong’s through three forms of textile decoration – batik, applique and embroidery. You will not only see the making of but also learn about the meanings behind such motifs. We will also exhibit new collections inspired by the Hmong textiles to spark a conversation about bringing ethnic traditions to contemporary, international markets. Have we mentioned a reception with Hmong’s musical performance and local corn wine and bread, served in the authentic bamboo-carved bowls and cups?

The film Connect To Ethnic Textiles – Hemp Producers, spotlights the hemp growing and weaving processes in Pa Co – the two women featured will be present at the event in Hanoi so you can meet them face to face.

GROOVY EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC THAT MAKES YOU DANCE

Hailing from Norway, STAER are an instrumental, avant-rock, power-noise trio. Sparked by the Scandinavian abstract, experimental and musique concréte scenes that traced their surroundings, their chemistry was further charged by European, American and Japanese noise-rock, improv and classical influences.

With their latest album ‘Daughters’ (2013) STAER steps it up a gear, sucking the listener into its bombinating, cacophonic void and totally enveloping them in an alien sub-reality. The experience brings to mind an expulsion into an outer-worldly floating battlefield, stretching across the vast horizon-less chasm of the Universe.

At its heart two enormous dueling space-titans collide amidst the planets, hurling moons at one another, crunching their torsos across the hemispheres of Mercury and Neptune whilst emitting a constant miasma of thunderous resonance. The centrepieces of a diabolical Boschian theatre.

Easily one of the best bands currently inhabiting the live underground music scene, STAER’s enactment of these albums is something to behold; a visceral pasting not to be missed. Catch them as you must.

BLACK PACKERS (france / norway – noise)

BLACK PACKERS is a noise/ pedal-porn duo consisting of feedback worshippers Jean-Philippe Gross and John Hegre.

“A black packer is “an impressionable black metal fan who travels from abroad to Norway in order to hang out in places where famous black metal musicians hang out too” (Urbandictionary.com). Not these guys, who, judging by the wall of noise they make, probably eat black metallers for breakfast and vomit their skeletons and guitars into a tape player.”

Concert with Pianist Anne Chamberlain and Vietnamese Singers

The American pianist Anne Chamberlain already inspired the audience at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi in 2010 and 2013. This time together with Vietnamese musicians, she will take the audience on a musical journey from the 18th century German classic, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to the compositions of Richard Strauss, which will be sung by Ryoko Bohkumi.

About artists

Anne Chamberlain, pianist, has traveled to Ha Noi many times to perform with both, singers and instrumentalists. She has played for singers at the Viet Nam Opera and Ballet Company as well as several concerts with instrumentalists at Goethe Institut, Manzi, and on VNTV and Ha Noi Radio. Ms. Chamberlain’s home is in the U.S. near New York City where she has played many solo concerts as well as collaborated with singers and other instrumentalists. She has played throughout the United States and in Europe where her programs often include contemporary music.

Dinh Thu Huong, pianist, graduated from the Ha Noi Academy Conservatory in 2000. Since then she has been working as accompanist for the Viet Nam Opera and Ballet chorus. She is also currently working on her Master Degree with Professor Dr. Tran Thu Ha at the Ha Noi Academy Conservatory. Dinh Thu Huong and Anne Chamberlain have played together in concerts in Ha Noi for many times in the last years.

Ryoko Bohmuki, soprano, graduated as a voice major from the Osaka College of Music, in Japan and has been living in Ha Noi since 2007. She performs in the chorus, as a soloist and as a pianist at the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet(VNOB), as well as at other concert houses.

Dao Thi To Loan, soprano, studies voice at the Viet Nam Academy of Music and will finish her degree work there this Summer. Her teachers include Trần Thị Ngọc Lan and Siri Torjesen. In 2011 she was awarded first prize in the Sao Mai National Singing Competition of Viet Nam. She was also granted a scholarship in 2012 from the Goethe Institute in Ha Noi to study in Germany where she studied in the cities of Bonn and Frankfurt for five months. Ms. To Loan performs both traditional and popular Vietnamese songs, as well as Western classical voice repertoire. She is considered to be among the best singers in Ha Noi and has been soloist with the Viet Nam Symphony Orchestra as well as having performed in several foreign countries.

Jennifer Whennen, Mexican-American, is a classically-trained soprano and has performed a variety of concerts and operas in and around Europe, the US and Japan.

Jean Constantinesco, Franco-Romanian, studied classical guitar and further enriched his playing with flamenco in Sevilla, Spain and later with gipsy jazz in Bucharest, Romania.

These two musicians coming together will offer a mixture of their talents and musical backgrounds. Jennifer’s rich and vibrant color with Jean’s delicate yet fiery playing offer a colorful blend as they interpret jazz, world, folk and Latin repertoire.
