On Saturday August 31th 2013, TPD Centre will host next session of Two Thumbs Up Movie programme. We will screen Annie Hall (1977), directed by Woody Allen.
Annie Hall is a 1977 American romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen from a screenplay he co-wrote with Marshall Brickman. The director co-stars as Alvy Singer, who tries to figure out the reasons for the failure of his relationship with the film’s eponymous female lead, played by Diane Keaton. Allen has described the film as “a major turning point”,which, unlike the farces and comedies that were his work to that point, introduced a level of seriousness where, he says, he “had the courage to abandon … just clowning around and the safety of complete broad comedy. I said to myself, ‘I think I will try and make some deeper film and not be as funny in the same way. And maybe there will be other values that will emerge, that will be interesting or nourishing for the audience.”
Along with the 1978 Academy Award for Best Picture, Annie Hall won Oscars in three other categories: two for Allen (Best Director and, with Brickman, Best Original Screenplay), and Keaton for Best Actress. Often listed among the greatest film comedies, it ranks 31st on AFI’s list of the top feature films in American cinema, fourth on their list of top comedy films and number 28 on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies.”

Paintings Exhibition at the Embassy of Denmark

Come to admire the Embassy’s new artwork, kindly lend by a compilation of up-coming as well as established artists. The exhibition has a total of 26 specially selected paintings from an array of genres. Five of the art pieces are from celebrated Pham Luc, generously contributed from Nguyens Si Dung’s private collection, and three are the renowned works of Ngo Chinh. The remaining 18 paintings have been carefully chosen by a board, and give talented up-coming artists the chance to adorn the walls of the embassy with their works.
The artworks will be exhibited in 6 months, until end of February 2014.

A Fantastic Photo Adventure in Moc Chau

Vietnam in Focus are running a fantastic photo adventure over the long holiday weekend of August 30th to September 2nd to the mountain town of Moc Chau and its annual H’mong love market. This is a unique opportunity to experience and photograph an event that draws people of the H’mong minority from all over northern Vietnam in search of both new marriage partners and old flames.
We travel by chartered minibus to Moc Chau, Son La province, taking up residence for the weekend at a beautiful local homestay in the countryside. Release Event and Artist’s Talk of CD “Signal in Noise”

Come to the release event of double CD Signal in Noise of The Six Tones, a Vietnamese-Swedish experimental music ensemble. Building on a concept of mutual learning, musical traditions from Viet Nam and Europe are brought together into music that aims to reach beyond a mere collage-like superimposition of elements and strive for a more complex and experimentally oriented sound.
Signal in noise is a double CD with The Six Tones and guests from the Hanoi scene of traditional and experimental music. Recorded in Hanoi at Kiên Quyết Studio, the CD is now released on dB Productions, Sweden. The group is now in Hanoi working at Dom Dom and invites the audience to an event with live music and conversations about a music project that bridges many distinct cultural and musical traditions.
Since 2006, The Six Tones has been bringing art music from Vietnam and Europe together, touring as an instrumental music group or in music theatre projects, and working with choreographers. We play traditional Vietnamese music in hybrid settings for Western stringed instruments and traditional Vietnamese instruments. We improvise in traditional and experimental Western idioms and also commission new music by composers in Asia as well as in Western countries. The Six Tones are Nguyễn Thanh Thủy and Ngô Trà My and the Swedish guitarist Stefan Östersjö (also playing many other stringed instruments). Since the project started, we have been collaborating with the composer and improviser Henrik Frisk, who has both composed works for the ensemble as well as toured with the group as a lap top improviser. The name of the group, emanating from a composition by Henrik, relates to the fact that the Vietnamese language is a tonal language using six tones or intonations. Building on a concept of mutual learning, musical traditions from Viet Nam and Europe are brought together into music that aims to reach beyond a mere collage-like superimposition of elements and strive for a more complex and experimentally oriented sound.
The four guests on the CD are Lê Phổ, a leading proponent of traditional flute music in Vietnam, and currently the head of the department for traditional music at the Vietnam national Academy of Music and three key figures from the experimental music scene: Trí Minh, Vũ Nhật Tân and Trần Thị Kim Ngọc.

On Saturday august 24th 2013, TPD Centre will host next session of Two Thumbs Up Movie programme. We will screen Pulp Fiction (1994).
Pulp Fiction is a 1994 American black comedy and crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino, who also co-wrote the screenplay along with Roger Avary. The film is known for its eclectic dialogue, ironic mix of humor and violence, nonlinear storyline, and a host of cinematic allusions and pop culture references. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture; Tarantino and Avary won for Best Original Screenplay. It was also awarded the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. A major critical and commercial success, it revitalized the career of its leading man, John Travolta, who received an Academy Award nomination, as did costars Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman.

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents the Android-Human Theatre “Sayonara” in Hanoi on Saturday 31 August 2013.
Internationally acclaimed playwright and director Prof. Oriza Hirata of Osaka University and Seinendan Theatre Company, has been uniquely collaborating with world-renowned robotics specialist Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro Ph. D., also of Osaka University, ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories, in their Android-Human Theatre projects since 2007. Their past plays, in which human actors share the stage with robots, are groundbreaking in arts and sciences.
“Sayonara” [which literally means Good Bye in Japanese] is an innovative short play performed by human actors and a Geminoid F, a humanoid robot that looks exactly like the woman who it was modeled after, developed in 2010 by Prof. Ishiguro’s laboratory.
It was premiered in 2010 at the Aichi Triennale in Japan and since then, it has been staged in a plethora of countries including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, the United States, Australia, Korea and Thailand, winning both general and expert’s extremely high applause.
The original play depicts a scene in which a humanoid-robot recites Japanese, French and German poems to her dying young master. In the latest version of the play, however, Playwright Hirata adds a short episode after the young master’s death. After losing her master, the humanoid-robot is assigned to a new task; mourning for the deceased at the place where humans cannot enter.
The play might be simple and short in length (30 min.) but pregnant and deep in meaning, questioning us, “What do life and death mean to humans and robots?” We do hope the audience will enjoy this extraordinary theatrical event not simply by admiring for the humanoid robot’s acting but by being deeply moved by her.
The play will be held three times at 10:00/15:00/20:00 on Saturday 31 August 2013 at Worker’s Theatre (42 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi), followed by Oriza Hirata’s talk on Android-Human Theatre projects. Both programs will be delivered in Japanese with Vietnamese sub-titles or interpretation.
The admission is free but you are required to get free advanced tickets which will be distributed at the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi / 04-3944-7419).
Children under 15 years old are not allowed to attend.
French singer to perform acoustic set
French singer and guitarist Isis L will go acoustic at the Decibel Lounge August 23
The singer, who was influenced by pop-folk and soul music, began to learn guitar by herself in 2007, and wrote her first song two months later. Now she has some 20 original songs to her credit and remixed more than 70 popular songs by Benjamin Francis Leftwhich, and Panic at the Disco!
Her show will begin at 8.30pm. The venue is at 79/2/5 Phan Ke Binh Street, District 1.
HCM City club to present cosplay, Japanese music
The District 1-based Darts Darts Darts Club will host a Japanese animation party on Sunday featuring cosplay and music performed by Japanese artists.
Five-member band L.C.L will perform cosplay as well as rock music, while DJs Sakana Chan and Shikamaru will play Japanese pop and rock, and music from Japanese idols, animation, TV game, and Vocaloid.
The party will be held from 1pm – 4.30pm. The club is at 224A Pasteur Street.
Entrance is VND50,000, and free for cosplayers.
American death-metal band comes to town
American death metal band Disgorge will present a night of rock at Q4 in District 4 on August 22 as part of an Asian tour it calls "Asia Infinite Torture".
The band will perform together with local bands Black Infinity, Atmosphere, and Brutore, Soul Obsolete from Thailand, and Clandestined from Japan.
Formed in 1992 in San Diego, the five-member band has released five albums and toured the world.
The show will begin at 6.30 pm. The venue is at 7 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.

Neither exactly a film screening or a concert, SILENCE has more in common with the teachings and practices of meditation. A silent retreat for the iPad generation, accompanied by beautiful, abstract and non-intrusive visuals and sounds.
One strict rule applies throughout the evening, at all times and not only while the film is showing: once you have entered the Red Room (which, for the occasion, would be transformed to resemble more its namesake and less a dancefloor one humid August night in Hanoi) – ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING ALLOWED.
That means, no ‘hello’ and ‘how’s it going’, no making acquaintances, no exchanging phone numbers, no finding out you two live on the same street, no flirting, no discussing arts and English football and Murakami and the war on terrorism. That means having a decent (and potentially transcendental) ‘night out’ without all the things you take for granted.
It might seem ironic to provide sound and visual accompaniment at an event partly inspired by John Cage’s (masterpiece) 4’33 – but we believe the wonderful film and music from CHRISTINA VANTZOU (one of the most distinct ambient / contemporary classical artists these days), the super-rare minimalism DJ set from SEBASTIEN GESELL as well as MATHIAS ROSSIGNOL’s mysterious sound collages, given your sole attention, will be the perfect vehicles for your ascent to galaxies afar.
Composed from original 16mm footage, animation, and found materials, CHRISTINA VANTZOU creates a moving, hypnotic dance of light and color akin to the cinematic sweep of the album. Effectively channelling experimental film titans Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren and John Whitney while also pushing the sound/image relationship into new, uncharted arenas, No. 1 is an enveloping, rapturous work pulsating with life.
What becomes more and more ambiguous when watching Nº 1 is if the music has been composed as a soundtrack for the originally composed images, or if the images have inspired a musical composition. The hierarchical relationship between image and sound which we’ve grown accustomed to from music videos and cinema is flipped upside down and ultimately erased, to produce a cohesive, synesthetic experience.
CHRISTINAT VANTZOU is an artist, musician, and composer. Christina is known for her work with The Dead Texan (kranky) as well as in a variety of creative mediums including video, drawing, and animation. After various collaborations and a short tenure as a touring member of Sparklehorse in the summer of 2007, Christina began composing the music for this album.
While certainly orbiting in the same musical galaxy as those of Stars of the Lid, The Dead Texan or A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Vantzou’s compositions are full symphonic movements as opposed to the shorter pop structures of the latter. These works also draw parallels to a number of late 20th century composers who concentrated on layering the string sections of orchestras while steering clear of bombastic brass and percussion elements.
SEBASTIEN GESELL has always been one helluva versatile DJ, and while this very special set of quiet minimalism music he will showcase on the night could not be more different from the tunes he usually throws at Hanoian ravers, it will be just as trance-inducing.
As a soundtrack to daydreaming, MATHIAS ROSSIGNOL will arrange and present a meditative collage of sounds that plays inside the Red Room throughout the whole evening – field recordings and musical fragments, sounds of nature and human, raw and processed, new and old, from here and from there, some random and some deliberate… If at all possible, refrain from expecting anything.

Come to a very special historical display of images, paintings and royal costumes exploring the attire worn by Vietnamese people from all levels of society throughout the last 1,000 years.
Conducted by the 28-year-old researcher Tran Quang Duc of the Viet Nam Institute of Literature, this study is described as the most comprehensive research ever undertaken on the subject, and was published by Nha Nam Company and World publishing house earlier this year.
“It is an absolute blessing that such valuable resources have been published as a book. Up until now, this is most likely one of the most in-depth and into-details studies on the Vietnamese culture and clothing, both locally and internationally.” – Researcher Trinh Bach, who has spent many years studying traditional culture, especially Vietnamese royal costumes, is one of many experts to praise the book.

You are invited to a photo exhibition “Accessible Arctic”. These spectacular photos of Canada’s Arctic were assembled and curated by the Canadian Museum of Nature together with Canadian Geographic.
The photos in the “Accessible Arctic” exhibition are reflections of how the North has always been at the very heart of Canadian identity. Canada’s Arctic makes up over 40% of Canada’s landmass and is home to more than 100,000 Canadians. Northerners, including indigenous peoples, who comprise 80 percent of the population in some regions, have brought a number of issues to the world’s attention: the dangers and challenges posed by climate change; the need for sustainable economic development; and the importance of sharing experiences and knowledge with our circumpolar neighbours and the world.

After the success of the last 2 seasons, the 3rd K-pop Singing Contest in Vietnam was launched in 25 Jun 2013 with 2 elimination rounds in the South (3 Aug 2013) and the North (10 Aug 2013). The 3rd season has attracted nearly 300 registered candidates across the country, of which 16 talents were selected to the final round in Hanoi. This is an opportunity for contestants to show their passion in music in general and particularly in Korean pop music (K-pop).
The jury board for this final round includes pianist Trang Trinh, singer Dinh Huong and officials from several Korean institutions. The most talented contestants that receive best judge reviews this year will have the chance to take part in some Korean language courses at the University of Jeonju, Korea.
‘Encounter’ Lecture with Professor Ngo Bao Chau

Come to the inaugural ‘Encounter’ lecture with Professor Ngô Bảo Châu, renowned mathematician, 2010 Fields Medal winner and 2013 Simons Foundation recipient. Professor Ngô Bảo Châu will discuss the common ground between an artist’s and scientist’s work, addressing how he perceives artists as seeking rigor in their work in a fashion equal to scientists, especially mathematicians, who similarly look for ideas of beauty.
‘Encounter’ forms part of a larger interdisciplinary endeavor called ‘Conscious Realities’ (2013-2016), consisting of lectures, workshops and a residency program, focusing on the shared cultural histories of South East Asia, South Asia, Latin America and Africa, by inviting artists and creative intellectuals to engage the divergent reactions to these histories and the lessons to be learned in thinking laterally across creative communities.
Simultaneous translation will be provided (Vietnamese to English).
The lecture will be live-fed outside Auditorium D to accommodate extended audience.
Ngô Bảo Châu is a mathematician who is best known for his proof of the Fundamental Lemma, an intricate problem in number theory. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2010, which is generally regarded as the highest distinction in mathematics. He teaches at the University of Chicago and also serves as the scientific director of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics. He is an editor of “Inventiones Mathematicae”, one of the best mathematical journals.
In his spare time, Professor Châu is a blogger. In his blog ‘thichhoctoan’, he writes on mathematics and science, on philosophy and literature, and occasionally on politics and society. He wrote the children’s book “Ai and Ky in the land of invisible numbers” with a popular blogger with the curious name 5xu. He also serves as editor of the books series “The doors wide open” with writer Phan Viet.

Nha San Collective is inviting you to the talk with Nguyen Manh Duc and Nguyen Phuong Linh about Thời Bao cấp – The Economic Subsidy, and its representation, influences in Nha San artists’s works.
A presentation of collectible objects from so called “The Economic Subsidy” time will take place on Aug. 21st – 25th. This is an important period in Vietnam’s history as well as of the other socialistic countries. It still has strong influences in Vietnam’s economy, culture, society and art.
Nguyen Manh Duc is an artist, antique collector and restorer. He co-founded Nha San Studio – the first and longest running space for experimental art in Vietnam in 1998.
Nguyen Phuong Linh is an experimental, installation and performance artist. She is also an organizer and programmer of Nha San Collective’s art program. She will introduce artworks of Nguyen Manh Hung, Nguyen Tran Nam, Nguyen Anh Tuan (Tuan Mami), Appedix Collective (Phu Luc Group) and Katarzyna Golebiowska from Poland.

After several highly successful events in 2011, 2012 and our latest event in June 2013, TEDxHoankiem are now back with our biggest event of the year: “The Eyes”. The event’s main purpose is to unleash the audience with a more opened and multilateral attitude about issues that are currently in a great public demand by sharing our guest speakers’ fascinating ideas.
The program will deliver unseen perspectives of the “old” issues that people might not know about or still attract lots of attention. TEDxHoankiem tries to minimize the possibility of identifying right or wrong views but actually focuses on eliciting the audience’s critics in order for them to unlock their potentials of evaluating things in an objective and multidimensional way with a higher minding consideration.

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with Nanarokusha Publishing Inc., proudly presents the photography exhibition “Mirai-chan: A little girl with chubby red cheeks” by Kotori Kawashima in Hanoi from Sunday 18 August to Sunday 15 September 2013.
A Japanese promising photographer Kotori Kawashima has shot a photography series “Mirai-chan”, through a year, containing portraits of the daughter of his friend in Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture in the northern central region of Japan.
Being on the cover of a legendary famous arts and culture magazine “BRUTUS” triggered a big sensation in Japan and “Mirai-chan” became the talk of the town as a super adorable girl who conveys the vitality and energy of life. The photography book “Mirai-chan” has been sold exceptionally well, with over 100,000 copies since March 2011.
The photography exhibition “Mirai-chan” has been also warmly received in several cities including Tokyo and Osaka in Japan, and was invited to Thailand and Taiwan. Vietnam is the third foreign country who hosts this charming exhibition.
Kotori thinks that the girl in the photography series possesses a lovable human nature which is universal for all human-being. He also thinks that there is a hint to think about future in the midst of beautifully changing four seasons and Japanese traditional culture remaining over generations in Sado Island. These ideas gave a birth to the conceptual girl “Mirai-chan”.
We do hope that the viewers will share the moments of the joyful and surprising feelings with “Mirai-chan” who experiences first contacts with the world in various occasions. The exhibition is free admission and held at the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi). Its opening starts at 16:00 on Saturday 17 August with the photographer’s talk and runs until Sunday 15 September 2013.
About Kotori Kawashima:
Kotori Kawashima was born in 1980 in Tokyo, graduated from Department of French Literature, School of Letters, Arts and Science, Waseda University and currently works and lives in Tokyo.
Studied photography under Genqui Numata. In 2006, Kotori Kawashima earned the Grand Prize at the 10th Itaru Hirama by Shinpusha for his work “BABY BABY” in which he took a photography series of one girl, resulting in the publication of the same titled photography book. In 2011, he received the 42nd Publishing Culture Prize by Kodansha for Photography for his work “Mirai-chan”. Currently he has been working mainly for shooting portraits but also active in taking photographs for books, magazines and CD covers.

On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of Japan-Vietnam Diplomatic relationship, Embassy of Japan in Vietnam will organize the Calligraphy Demonstration and Workshop by Japanese Calligrapher Takeda Souun, entitled “The Power of Calligraphy”.
Mr. Takeda Souun, a famous Japanese calligrapher was appointed “Japan Cultural Envoy 2013” by Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He has made many demonstrations and lectures on calligraphy as well as calligraphy writings for various events in the world. (Some typical calligraphy writings such as the name of the world heritage “Hiraizumi”, the name of super computer “K computer” located at Japan Technology Research Institute). In addition to that, he has collaborated with the various artists such as musicians and sculptors and organized many original exhibitions with a lot of attraction in the world. This is the first time he come to Vietnam to have calligraphy demonstrations and workshops. In Hanoi, he will have demonstration and exchange with Vietnamese Excellent Actor Mr. Trung Hieu and members of Vietnam UNESCO Calligraphy Club at Literature Temple, the historical site in Vietnam. In Hoi An, he will have workshops at the Japan-Hoi An Festival.

*Artist Trung Hieu is famous for his excellent performance on television, theater plays and dramas. He won the prize for the leading actor at Vietnam Film Festival 2009 and the Best Actor of the year 2012 by Vietnam Stage Artist Association. He started studying calligraphy in 2001 and becomes one of the best calligraphers of Vietnam Young Calligraphy Club.
**Vietnam UNESCO Calligraphy Club belongs to Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations. Since its establishment the Club has studied continuously and thoroughly the calligraphy and held a lot of exchange activities in order to make calligraphy closer to Vietnamese people’s life such as Calligraphy Festival in commemoration of 1000th year Thang Long-Hanoi at Literature Temple, Exhibition of Calligraphy writings of Ho Chi Minh Poems and Sayings on the occasion of 100th year since the departure of President Ho Chi Minh for finding the way of national libration (1911-2011) at Literature Temple and Hanoi National University.

The American pianist Anne Chamberlain already inspired the audience at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi in 2010. This time together with the Vietnamese musicians, she will take the audience on a musical journey from the 18th century German classic, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to the Argentinian tango, revisited in a contemporary way by the founder of Tango Nuevo, Astor Piazzolla in the 20th century. Tango Nuevo combines the passion and dramatic of the classical tango with new rhythm, influenced by jazz and folklore music.

About artists
Anne Chamberlain was born in New York City, graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and studied at the Juilliard School. She has given concerts as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe. In recent years she has performed in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, coaching and accompanying singers from the Viet Nam National Opera Company and giving chamber music concerts with leading instrumentalists from Ha Noi community.
Le Tuan Anh was born into a family with long music tradition since his father is a profesional violinist. After graduating from Vietnam National Academy of Music he became a member of the VNOB (Vietnam National Opera and Ballet) as an artist and Concert Master of Orchestra. Besides, he also performs in various chamber music ensembles.
Nguyen Thanh Tu started her cello studies at Vietnam National Academy of Music and graduated in 2010. Since then she attended the Beethoven Festival as member of the Ha Noi Philharmonic Orchestra held in Berlin and Bonn and participated in AYO (Asian Youth Orchestra), joining their camps and tours in Japan, China, Thailand, etc.
Ho Viet Khoa graduated with a Master degree in Violin Performance in 2005. He is a lecturer at the String Department of Vietnam National Academy of Music and a member of the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra VNAM and the Red River Ensemble.
The artists also play a mini concert at Manzi Art Space.

manzi proudly presents a radiated beautiful evening of classical music featuring famous pianist Anne Chamberlain and her Vietnamese talents Le Tuan Anh (violin), Ho Viet Khoa (viola) and Nguyen Thanh Tu (cello).
Writing about Chamberlain, The New York Times stated: “Anne Chamberlain, a pianist with the technical tools and intellectual acuity necessary to play 20th century music well, did not let her century down in her recital at Alice Tully Hall. Early or late composers found in the artist a persuasive advocate.”
Anne Chamberlain has concertized extensively as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Europe. Her numerous performances have included concerts at Alice Tully Hall and Town Hall in New York City, as well as appearances at other major halls, music festivals and universities, where she has premiered many works by her contemporaries. The Portland (Maine) Concert Association awarded Ms. Chamberlain the John Knowles Paine Award in recognition of her performances of American music of the late 20th Century. In recent years she has performed in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, coaching and accompanying singers from the Viet Nam National Opera & Ballet Theatre.

The Goethe- Institut presents photo reportages of 22 cities around the world.
The city is the origin of civilization, melting pot of cultures, mentalities, religions and ideas. Each day around the world almost 200.000 people are moving from the countryside to the cities, looking for a better life, security, freedom and prosperity. The city offers great chance, but also great risks for each individual: poverty, criminality and anonymity as well as blatant contrasts which shape many megacities today. Although: The city is the future of the world, the place which determines how people will henceforth live together.
The 18 photographers of the German agency OSTKREUZ are on the quest for finding the urban realities of today: How are people living in Tokyo and Manila, Lagos and Las Vegas, Berlin, Minsk and Gaza? Made up of overall 22 cities around the globe, the photographers have concentrated their personal impressions into photographic essays – a once-only long-term project. Shown are cities as places of future hope, but also in a way in which they seem to perish under the waste and chaos. All pictures present as a whole: the city of the future.
OSTKREUZ is the most significant Germanphoto agency. Founded at the end of the GDR in East Berlin after the model of Magnum it hosts the most import contemporary German photographers. To its 20-year-anniversary OSTKREUZ members conceptualized and realized the exhibition “The city. From the becoming until the decay”, which is on an international tour since 2010.
The exhibition will be presented by the Fine Arts Museum Hanoi and the Goethe-Institut.
Two OSTKREUZ photographers JörgBrüggemannand Ute Mahler, will give a lecture about the exhibition and conduct a workshop.

The Hanoi Open exhibition aims to be the largest mixed media contemporary art exhibition to be hosted in Hanoi.
The exhibition will draw together a broad range of varied works by established and unknown artists, professional and amateur. The exhibition is designed to be a unique showcase for art and design in all styles and media, including painting, sculpture, photography, print, product, architectural models, film and fashion.
Work Room Four is putting out the call to artists to submit to be selected to participate in Hanoi’s first mixed open submission exhibition. Any artist may enter work for submission and artists are strongly encouraged to enter work that is available for sale. Work will be selected for exhibition by a panel of national and international art professionals. Selected work will then be curated by Work Room Four Directors and artists. There will be a series of prizes for each submission category, details of which will be launched closer to the exhibition opening.
The open exhibition will run from 26th September till 13th October 2013. The deadline for submissions is the 15th September 2013. Artists not selected for exhibition will be required to collect their works by 20th September 2013.

Art Talk about Artist’s Books

Artist’s Books: An Introduction to a New Form of Contemporary Art in Vietnam.
Not every art book is an artist’s book. Artist’s books are neither books about artists nor books about art, and they are not intended for bookshelves or libraries. Like most other contemporary art forms, artist’s book is a mixed-media work and is considered a work of art.
This talk will focus on the following themes:
- What an artist book is.
- How artist books have changed (includes examples of famous artist books).
- Whether Vietnamese artists make artist books.
The talk will use a few works from Joan Flasch’s Artists’ Book Collection and Vietnamese sources.
The introduction is given by Nguyễn Hồng Nhung, curator and founder of Nối, an art organization that connects Vietnamese artists with the outside world. She is currently studying Art Administration and Policy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is working at Joan Flasch’s Artists’ Book Collection, Chicago, US.
