Exhibition: 12 – 30 Apr 2014
Di Legno
188-6 Tanjong Katong Road, Singapore
Having started drawing as a young kid prior to starting school, Thanh Canh’s talent was soon discovered when a group of artists found him painting on the sand by the beach in his hometown Phu Quoc. A recipient of numerous awards, he graduated as a top student with Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of Fine Arts of Ho Chi Minh City in 2009. Thanh Canh currently lectures in his alma mater and has been a professional artist since 2005.

Screening of Documentary “Mysterious Object at Noon”
Tue 29 Apr 2014, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Hanoi DOCLAB cordially invites you to the screening of the “Mysterious Object at Noon” by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The documentary has been listed among the best films of the year 2000 by Film Comment and the Village Voice.
Mysterious Object at Noon (83 minutes)
“Mysterious Object at Noon” is the first feature by later Golden Palm winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul. He is one of the few filmmakers in Thailand who have worked outside the strict Thai studio system. In his work, he often uses non-professional actors and improvised dialogue in exploring the shifting boundaries between documentary and fiction.
A film crew travels from the Thai countryside to Bangkok, asking the people they encounter along the way to expand upon a story involving a wheelchair-bound young boy and his teacher. The resulting stories are later reenacted by non-professional actors in dramatic recreations of the freely associated narrative strokes supplied. The daisy-chain structure of interlocking vignettes was inspired by the surrealist game Exquisite Corpses, and its formal strategies are aligned with both documentary realism and the avant-garde, but this boldly original debut looks and feels like nothing else.
Filming was carried out for three years with a volunteer crew, and only stopped when the camera broke down – the last shot of the movie is literally the last piece of film that passed through the camera.
Language: The film is in Thai with English and Vietnamese subtitle.
Free entrance.
The screening is non-profit and aims for research and studies only.

Madake
81 Xuan Dieu, Hanoi
DELICATESSEN (1991)
95′ / Dir – Marc Caro + Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who would later go on to make Amelie)
French, with English subtitles
“A post-apocalyptic future becomes the setting for pitch black humor in this visually intricate French comedy.
The action takes place within a single apartment complex owned by the same man that operates the downstairs butcher shop.
It’s a particularly popular place to live, thanks to the butcher’s uncanny ability to find excellent cuts of meat despite the horrible living conditions outside.
The newest building superintendent, a former circus clown, thinks he has found an ideal living situation.
All that changes, however, when he discovers the true source of the butcher’s meat, and that he may be the next main course.
With its molelike inhabitants, its sprawling war between flesh-eaters and lentil-men, its achingly sweet love story and surrealist blend of dusty antiquities and 21st-century gizmos, Delicatessen is indescribably wild.”

‘Prod / Ponder’ Presents Art Labor
An Artist’s Talk: Art Labor’s ‘Unconditional Belief’: Thu 24 Apr 2014, 6 pm
Sàn Art
3 Mê Linh
District Bình Th?nh, HCMC
The value of artistic labor as a laboratory of ideas.
Art Labor will share how ‘Unconditional Belief’ started as a kind of laboratory of ideas that began with particular hypotheses about simultaneous belief in modern medicine and spiritual healing. This artist collective of 3 will share how their original hypotheses changed as a result of undertaking research into such things as ophthalmology*, to the story of illiteracy in Vietnam and the creation of a Vietnamese modern alphabetic script, to the occurrence of the ‘Magic Garden’ in Long An Province where people gather to heal their illness: all of which seeks to perhaps better understand the anthropological concept of ‘suffering’ in relationship to ‘animism’.
Art Labor will also talk about their own collective’s methodology — how their ‘idea- laboratory’ works as a think-tank, in which critical theorists and scientists are invited to consult, challenge and question their research. Such collaborations reflect how an artist’s practice is akin to other interdisciplinary forms of enquiry such as anthropology, history, architecture and medicine, which critically contribute to progressive ideas of social value in everyday life. The crossover dialog between art and science within the methods of Art Labor seeks to reaffirm that artistic production and practice is not limited by the white-cube gallery context. Indeed their practice demonstrates that such a nexus of minds is actually functional, educational, and a catalyst that can connect various publics to enact social change.
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye.
Event is free and will be conducted in English and Vietnamese. Seats inside are limited. Please arrange to come early for the best available position.
Art Labor is an artist and scientist collective based in Ho Chi Minh City, who work in between visual arts, social and life sciences in order to produce alternative non-formal knowledge via artistic and cultural activities within Vietnamese context. It includes 3 core members as cultural workers: artists Phan Thao Nguyen and Truong Cong Tung and curator/writer Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran.
Art Labor’s ‘Unconditional Belief’ is a part of ‘Prod/Ponder’, the artist-in-residence program as part of ‘Conscious Realities’ (2013-2016), which seeks to stimulate creative activity in Vietnam, engaging different ideas of contemporary artistic process, consisting of lectures, closed-workshops and an artist-in-residency program. Focusing on the shared cultural histories of South East Asia, South Asia, Latin America and Africa, invited artists and intellectual expertise on and from this region, will engage the divergent reactions to these histories and the lessons to be learned in thinking laterally across these creative communities.

deCult’s Art Talk 4: World Music and Dance with Dr Paul Mason
Sat 26 Apr 2014, 9 am – 12 pm
Heritage Space
Dolphin Plaza, 17 Tran Binh, My Dinh, Ha Noi
You are welcome to attend our Art Talk 04 with Australian dancer & composer Paul Mason.
In this Art Talk, Paul Mason, Australian dancer and composer will share with you his experience with practices of music and dance around the world. Music and dance are cherished by many societies as a distinctive and valued part of cultural production. Beyond being interesting for their own sake, music and dance have much to tell us about individual and cultural expression. Learning about different musical and dance cultures applies to the real world, because different genres of music and dance are a doorway into the cultural worlds of others. Learning a new language can take a long time, but learning new ways to move and groove can facilitate the process of bringing people together.
About Paul Mason. Composer, Dancer, Anthropologist
Paul currently works as a medical anthropologist for the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. His previous research has spanned ethnomusicology and dance anthropology in Brazil and Indonesia. He has also conducted historical research in Holland and ethnographic research on religious practices in India. His research has been published in over a dozen journals including Global Ethnographic, Inside Indonesia and Hypothesis.

Art Exhibition “Transcendence”
Opening: Fri 18 Apr 2014, 5 pm
Exhibition: 18 Apr – 02 May 2014
Casa Italia
18 Le Phung Hieu, Hanoi
Opening hours: 9 am – 9 pm all days
Phone (via Uni – Italia): 043 824 0579
The Embassy of Italy in Vietnam, in the framework of “Y-Viet 2014″ is glad to announce that on Friday, the 18th April at 5pm, at Casa Italia (18, Le Phung Hieu, Hanoi) will take place the official opening of the art exhibition “Transcendence” by the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Strano Spitù and two Vietnamese artists, Bang Sy Truc and Vu Pham Truong Minh. The exhibition will last until 2nd May, 2014.
Giuseppe Strano Spitù will start to realize his sculptures at the Hanoi University of Culture from April 14th and will hold talks with the artists and the students in the afternoon of April 17th. Special attention will be also paid to the opportunities to study in Italy thanks to the participation of Italian Lector Prof. Giuseppe Tidona, Prof. Marcello Silvestrini from Universita’ per Stranieri of Perugia and Uni-Italia Vietnam.
The common features of the three artists’ techniques, beyond the differences in the educational and cultural backgrounds and creative styles, lay in the search of a path toward a free artistic expression, a transcendence beyond “the chaos of psychological conflicts in modern life”.
Giuseppe Strano Spitù – who already exhibited in Italy and abroad – shares his thoughts: “My idea is that spirituality and energy should be looked for and must flow into tangible reality, not in asceticism. Spirituality and materiality are intrinsically linked. Special lighting effects on the works displayed will give the feeling of ethereal and material appearance at the same time”.Meanwhile, for Bang Sy Truc, the art comes from the soul, with an intimate relationship with our everyday life. Each image is imbued with sublimate thoughts leading to a deep aesthetic sensitiveness. Each artwork is a journey from life to art and back to life with new values and personal achievements.
Vu Pham Truong Minh, the youngest artist, chooses pop-art style to express simultaneously all the images from his journey, going beyond the ordinary chronological order and drawing from his readings, his visual experiences, and from the notion of religion and power. He pursued “Head series” from 2012, on the occasion of an exhibition in Thailand, with the objective to engage with others in the most direct and fastest way. “It’s my own world or your world, I do not know!” – a freehearted statement but also a question marks suspended somewhere inside each of us.HCMC – Brazillian Music Night

Green Palm Gallery – “At the End of the Line” Painting Exhibition
Opening: Fri 18 Apr, 5.30 pm
Exhibition: 18 – 23 Apr 2014
Vietnam Fine Arts Museum
66 Nguyen Thai Hoc St. Hanoi
ACCA group and Green Palm gallery cordially present an exciting exhibition titled “At the end of the line” by artist Nguyen Trong Minh.
In the recent years, artistic expression of Vietnamese arts in general, painting in particular, has become more sophisticated and diversified. Such sophistication and diversity are becoming more and more widely accepted as a common trend. After the inspirational Renovation (Doi moi) era in the early 90s, Viet Nam fine arts has fallen back on a downturn for a relatively long time. At present, there are harbingers of a revival with the emergence of a new artist generation. They are able to engage the social issues, using the language of arts and diverse styles to express their social criticism with an enthusiastic spirit of humanity.
From the very departure of his artistic course, Nguyen Trong Minh has adopted a realist style, in juxtaposition with the replicating mechanism of Pop art. The context of his artworks was always constructed in an infinite space, rife with melancholy symbolism, with a more or less touch of surrealistic aura. Realism and his somehow troubled life experiences are conducive to the artists’ distinctive style, which is rather elusive yet always full of anxiety, flashback, or satire. This, in turn, has precipitated an artistic
language of direct expression and criticism based on the artist’s reflection and parody of the surrounding environments in Vietnam, of which Minh is certainly a trailblazer in his own right.
In the artist’ self-statement, Minh related:
“I found life to be so complex, everything is at once crowded and vague. Everyone tries to scramble for something, even for one’s own breathes!
I need the calmness.
Things need to be stalled, clarified as black and white, condense and tight.
…
Fine arts, in my own way, have equipped me with the ability to best respond to life.”
“At the end of the line” exhibition is the first solo exhibition by Nguyen Trong Minh in Vietnam, though a number of his works have been presented and displayed at the National Fine Arts Exhibition 2010 and National Festival of Young Artists in 2011 in Hanoi.
“At the end of the line” will be opened at 17:30 P.M, Friday April 18th 2014 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Hanoi and will be showcased until the end of April 23rd 2014.
Nguyen Trong Minh was born in 1982 in An Thi district, Hung Yen province. From 2001 to 2004, he studied and graduated from the Central University of Art Pedagogy with his Pedagogy of Arts major. Upon graduation, he worked for 3 years as art teacher at Kim Tan junior high school, Lao Cai province. Unsatisfied and frustrated with the art education viewpoint, Nguyen Trong Minh left his job and continued to study Fine Arts at the University of Fine Arts of Vietnam, majored in Fine Arts until 2012.
Nguyen Trong Minh has participated in many art exhibitions, his works have been displayed at the “Red River Fine Arts Awards” exhibition in 2003, the National Fine Arts exhibition of 2010 and the National Festival of young artists in 2011. In 2013, Minh had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki, Finland.

Percussive Fingerstyle Guitar Concert “Đam mê & Chông gai”
Sun 20 Apr 2014, 8 – 10 pm
The Black Box
56 Nguyen Khuyen, Hanoi
Guitar Concert “Đam mê & Chông gai” tells the story of the pioneers in their field of art. They are the daring young men who live with passion and pursue the difference, the ones who bring into Vietnam new movements of art. Even though being pioneers means surviving obstacles… and sometimes even loneliness.
Audiences will be listening to the sharing from their heart to better understand their arduous journey to build a new art movement and enjoying their talents to further admire their patience and tireless efforts to assert themselves and inspire others.
Who are they? They are guitarists Tung AG, Nguyen Danh Tu… which present the latest line of guitar in Vietnam – percussive fingerstyle… and two special guests: beatboxer Minh Kien and popper Star Tf (Vu Tung Phuong).
* Percussive Fingerstyle Guitar is a line of Fingerstyle guitar incorporating sharp attacks on the strings, as well as hitting the strings and guitar top with the hand for percussive effect. Although being quite popular in the world, it was only introduced into Vietnam some years back. When playing, guitarist use their fingers to play the main melody, at the same time using percussive techniques on different parts of the guitar for percussive effect, giving listeners the feeling like they are enjoying the performance from a band rather than a solo guitar.
Performer
Guitarist Tung AG and other members of Vietnam Fingerstyle Guitar Organization (VNFS)
Tung AG (Do Duong Tung) came up with percussive fingerstyle guitar while being a student of environment studies. Because this guitar line has not been taught in Vietnam, he had to teach himself by using rewinding foreign guitar clips on the Internet. It took him 7 months to play the very first work Sunflower the right way.

Book Launch and Exhibition: “LOST&FOUND Hanoi”
Opening and Book Launch: Tue 15 Apr, 6 pm
Exhibition: 16 Apr – 18 May 2014, 09 am – 7 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Lose yourself in the grain of this thousand-year-old metropolis. Through five different viewpoints and five different cameras, Thing Asian Press’ most recent book of photographies “Lost&Found Hanoi” captures the “joy and the sadness at the end of the alley in the heart of Hanoi.” To celebrate the book launch, the Goethe-Institut and the photo artists will exhibit a selection of the pictures.
In the exhibition, you will enter living spaces tucked away in alleys; enjoy art installations that expose Hanoi’s natural world; study the architecture that has developed over the centuries, and the graphic design that has become an integral part of the urban landscape; watch people who are savoring a sidewalk meal, rushing off to work in a wild river of traffic, working at jobs that have existed forever and at new occupations that will change the city.
We invite you to watch the exuberance of boys taking flight on skateboards, the trendy chic of hipsters in tattoos and elegantly tailored blue jeans, the beauty of aging faces whose countenances have been shaped by decades of struggle. When you have seen the photographs, flipped through the book’s glossy pages, you’ll want to lose yourself in this city on your own, finding the places that will make Hanoi yours – a private terrain that rewards those who learn how to let the city take them.
On the night of the opening, discounted copies of “Lost&Found Hanoi” can be purchased.
Free entrance.

Concert with Universally-themed African Jazzy Soul: Gasandji
Thu 17 Apr 2014, 8 pm
IDECAF
28 Le Thanh Ton, Distr 1, HCMC
Come to a concert with singer Gasandji. Born in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gasandji blows, as a sort of mystery, the sacred dimension of both her music and songs. She defends naturally a certain idea of her African origins. Her first theatrical experiences happened when she was a dancer-choreographer. Gasandji became famous when she produced her own shows and when she appeared as a guest star for artists such as Lokua, Keziah Jones or Imany.
Gasandji sings mainly of herself. At first sight she does not resemble her music. This Congo-born artist stands out for her rather unconventional haircut; her voice is instead gentle and soft. Her music has been labelled afro-jazz, or afro-soul, but, as is often the case with African artists, this definition is lacking.
She released her selft-titled album in 2013 and won the Award « Coup de Cœur Francophone 2013 » of the Academy of Music Charles Cros.

A Special Performance of “Lưu Không/Jazz”
Fri 18 Apr 2014, 8 pm
Manzi Art Space
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi
Lưu Không/Jazz is a compo-improvisation that is inspired by the perspective of other musical traditions — using the point of view of modern European Jazz music and combining it with Chèo music.
Lưu Không/Jazz aims to create our own musical expression by using material from both traditions, Jazz and Cheo, to express the contemporary hybrid identity today.
This project presents the stimulative mutual inspiration and exchange of experiences between artists from Vietnam and Denmark. Using the material from traditional music is a way to enrich, understand and enhance a culture, as well as a good way to present contemporary art in Vietnam.
Lưu Không/Jazz will be performed by Xong group and guest artist SonX at Manzi art space.
Apart from the concert at manzi on 18 April, Xong group will have a workshop at the Vietnam Academy of Music and a performance at VNU University of Engineering and Technology on Thursday, 17 April.
Due to limited seating capacity, please pre-register at [email protected] before 3.00 p.m, Wed, 16 April 2014.
Proudly supported by the Cultural Development & Exchange Fund (CDEF) of the Danish Embassy and the Vietnam National Academy of Music
A Literary Event at Hanoi Social Club
Thu 17 Apr 2014, 8 – 10 pm
Hanoi Social Club
6 Hoi Vu Str, Hanoi
Claire Barnard is an American writer who has lived in Hanoi for over three years, and who has for a long time hesitated to write about the complicated city she now calls home. The Four Lakes Project is her endeavor, in prose and poetry, to break away from the familiar terrain that usually informs her work, and to take Hanoi as her inspiration. Her essay is a contemplation of place, the imagination and the poetry-writing process. Her poems, rhythmic and subtle, evoke physical and emotional landscapes inextricably bound up with one other.
Collaboration was key to this project. The poems will be accompanied by specially made short films (by Jacques Smit), and music (by Stephen Hoang). The dual-language chapbook available at the door features original illustrations by artist Heather Chan, and translations by Nhã Thuyên.
The evening will open with water-themed selections by poet, essayist, and translator Nguyễn Quí Đức (of Tadioto) and local playwright Matt Barns.
This is a literary event you won’t want to miss.
Entry fee: 60,000 (book included)
Screening of “Man Bites Dog”
Thu 17 Apr 2014, 8.30 pm
Madake
81 Xuan Dieu Str, Tay Ho Dist, Hanoi
You are invited to the screening of Man Bites Dog – a Belgian black comedy crime mockumentary.
MAN BITES DOG (1992)
96′ / Dir – Benoît Poelvoorde, Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel
“Mostly, Benoit is an ordinary sort of guy.
One passion, however, is unusual: he regularly commits murder
So intriguing is Benoit’s deadly charm that a film crew decide to make a documentary about him; and come to like him so much that they start facilitating, then collaborating in, his crimes.
This spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary is funny, scary, provocative, and profoundly disturbing. It’s a witty, uncompromising acknowledgment of both film-makers’ and audiences’ often unhealthy fascination with the spectacle of violence and reality TV.”
Language: French, with English subtitles
FREE ENTRY. 10 FREE prints of an original illustration (based on the film) by Jacob I. Evans
