The festival will open in HCM City on May 13, in Hanoi on May 15 and for the first time ever, in the central city of Hue from May14 to 25.

This annual cultural event is jointly organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam, embassies of EU Member States and European Cultural Institutes, showcasing Europe’s rich cinema heritage, diverse culture and contemporary creativity.

In this 18th edition of the Festival, the selected films focus on the theme of “tolerance and respect” which is a new feature of this annual event.

Through these films, spectators will enter the world of different emotional states of every European. It is a collection of passion, joy, fear and frustration, loneliness and sorrow, misunderstanding, surprise, tolerance and compassion, respect and love.

Especially for this edition, most of the films have been selected previously in several national and international festivals and have won highlyacclaimed awards all over the world.

Through a collection of drama, sports, biography and children's movies targeting different audiences, the Festival is expected to offer Vietnamese movie lovers delightful and interesting experiences.

“Mutual tolerance and respect are key for happy societies. They are central values in European culture and are the main theme during this year’s European Film Festival. We hope our Vietnamese friends will appreciate the beauty of mutual tolerance and respect as displayed in our films, and as they are also key in Vietnamese society,” said Head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, Ambassador Bruno Angelet.

Founded in 2000, the European Film Festival has become a prominent and anticipated cultural event in Vietnam. It has established itself as a credible avenue to bring new and captivating aspects of European culture to Vietnamese people, by showcasing films that would otherwise not be shown in Vietnamese commercial cinemas.

This cinematic event is part of a broader series of “Europe Days 2017” events clustered around Europe Day (9 May), a cycle which since its inception in 2004 has gained a high profile in the cultural life of Vietnamese people.

In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, most of the films will be screened in two sessions. In Hue, each film will be screened once.

All films will be screened in their original languages with English and Vietnamese subtitles.
