Visitors to Sa Pa town are attracted by vibrant brocade costumes of local ethnic communities and buy them as gifts for their families and friends. The huge demand for brocade products has helped the locality deviseits initiatives to boost the traditional craft as a way to improve local livelihoods.



 Lao Chai Communal Club for Brocade Embroidery is a familiar address for many localwomen in Sapa town, Lao Cai province between crops, where they can receive embroidery orders as extra work to earn more money.

Their hard works pay off with 20 to 30 USD per month, which is enough for them to cover some part of their kids’ tuition fee.

Besides fulfilling orders, they also make their own designs and sell them to tourists.

The brocade making craft contributes to the locality’s poverty reduction progress.

Brocade making has so far offered 45 women jobs which bring about 44USDper person each month.

The more tourism in Sapadevelops, the better off Mong ethnic women’s life becomes, as brocade embroidery products are among the tourists’ top choices as gifts for their family, friends and loved ones.

Developing traditional crafts as a tourism product has been carried out in many localities and proved effective. Not only does it improve people’s living standard, but it also contributes to the preservation and promotion of ethnic traditional crafts.
