San Art cordially invites our colleagues and audiences to participate in a performance with artist Ly Hoang Ly on Tuesday, November 28. As an open-ended conclusion to her open studio, the artist and participants will walk together, open up and carry on stories about the aesthetic and social values of performance art, about the possibilities of displaying and experiencing public works of art. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, walking shoes, and come along with a spirit of playfulness and openness.

Sàn Art is proud to partner with Visual AIDS and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for Day With(out) Art 2023 by presenting Everyone I Know Is Sick, a program of five videos generating connections between HIV and other forms of illness and disability.

The program features newly commissioned work by Dorothy Cheung (Hong Kong), Hiura Fernandes & Lili Nascimento (Brazil), Beau Gomez (Canada/Philippines), Dolissa Medina & Ananias P. Soria (USA), and Kurt Weston (USA).

Perhaps no one has ever lived without thinking about the occult world. The coexistence between the physical world and the spiritual world has been subject to much research and debates over the years, but each one of us surely has our own answer.

Inner strength has carried Hà Châu Bảo Nhi through traumatic early life experiences (with life & death) as well as recent devastating personal loss and yet, the aftermath of inflicted emotional pain still remains. Rather than sinking deeper into the darkness, she turned to the healing power of art to save herself. Through this artwork series, she aims to document her personal observations about the spiritual world, death and rebirth, loss and gain, hope and pain, all intertwined in the dual nature of life as we know it.

Vu Hiep undertook a long and strenuous path when concurrently researching fine art and the artistic application of architecture, resulting in his eccentric art form. One that was molded from Vietnamese spiritual values, architecture, ancient sculpture, and peculiar artistry with a surreal touch from the traditional painting material, silk.Only a few contemporary painters pursue a path with such a distinct and coherent mindset. A prominent attribute in Vu Hiep’s paintings is the integration of traditional folklore, with its vague yet witty humor, and sometimes exaggeration (or “sass” – stated by the artist when talking about Vietnamese artistic identity).

Vietnam Art Collection (VAC) is delighted to present ‘Overvoltage’, a site-responsive intervention by Vy Trịnh, curated by Vân Đỗ and organized by Á Space.

The scanner stops working suddenly, total black out. A train crashed, the chassis is burning into hazy ashes and flames. No one knows what has happened. The clock ticks backwards, time stops then runs again x 5.0 speed. The sculptor arrives on an Akira slide. Everything is pitch black. The last light bulb begins to flicker.

Space is the main material in ‘Overvoltage’. Taking an existing site – an electric supply room – as an organic and mechanical site, both human and nonhuman, ‘Overvoltage’ witnesses an encounter between existing traces of an overall architectural structure and a sculptor who will produce on site, within a specific time frame, using materials sourced from electrical supply stores, adhering to the industry and the ecologies within the factory and nearby the site (Long Biên District).

‘Overvoltage’ proposes that a particular site is not necessarily overcast by its socio-political shadows, but can rather be felt and made present – like how electricity current delivers, flows, and interrupts – through affect. Through Vy’s methodology of active working on-site, the train factory becomes her motor in revealing the kind of personality it once was and is as of now – being exposed, intervened, coming into sudden contact with strangers, awaiting an undetermined future.

Talk | “International Film Festival: Behind the scenes stories and processes”

Within the framework of the Italian Film Festival 2023 from November 27 to December 2, 2023 in Hanoi, the Embassy of Italy and the Asian Film Festival in Rome invite cinema enthusiasts to a talk titled “International Film Festival: Behind the scenes stories and processes” with guest speakers from Italy and Vietnam. The experienced director of the Asian Film Festival in Rome who serves as the curator of the Italian Film Festival 2023, Antonio Termenini will join the discussion with film director Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp, film critic Lê Hồng Lâm, and Phạm Minh Toàn the executive director of the first Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival, with journalist Trương Uyên Ly as the moderator. The talk will centre on their experiences and lessons learnt at international film festivals as organisers, observers and people who understand the joys, sorrows and tension behind the curtains at these events.

“Sand Sand Sand”

“Sand Sand Sand” is a minimal music theatre composed and performed by the duo Siedl/Cao. In “Sand Sand Sand”, one comes into contact with “time“ in several ways and from different perspectives. Its slowness and its minimalism is a reaction to social acceleration and the overwhelming amount of information available nowadays.

Here, ordinary things suddenly receive new layers of meaning when they are placed in a correlation/contrast/collision of different contexts. Such thing happens when an early 20th century French waltz is paired with a coded and robotized gesture. Or the dialogue between childhood photos and a nightingale, or when the words written on the page are released into the air amid the melodious music of “The Blue Danube” and amidst the sounds of New Year firecrackers. An interesting collision of notions of time can also arise when postcards accidentally found in a Vienna flea market and Vietnamese ancient poems share space with a flock of swallows flying away from the North…

Heritage Space is delighted to introduce a contemporary art exhibition titled “Alternative Mobility” , featuring the works of Vietnamese and international artists. The exhibition is a part of Month of Art Practice MAP 2023 – an annual international exchange project dedicated to promoting contemporary art initiated and has been organized by Heritage Space since 2015. This exhibition is also a part of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2023 with the theme “Flow”.

Mobility changes the world in all aspects. What does mobility mean in the face of unstable environmental, political, and social conditions? Month of Art Practice (MAP) invited artists with a diversity of perspectives to explore the topic from a personal to a global level, creating different narratives and nuanced images. MAP 2023 – The Alternative Mobility is a collaboration between Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK) and Heritage Space in Hanoi, Vietnam, and part of the BMBF Collaborative Research Project Bremen Goes Sustainable – BreGoS. At both locations, a group of international artists and curators worked together with local artists and students. The results will be shown in parallel in Bremen and Hanoi in two exhibitions launched at the end of November 2023.

The four invited artists Sylbee Kim (Berlin/Seoul), Felix Dreesen (Bremen), Kayle Brandon (Bristol), and Quỳnh Lâm (Ho Chi Minh City) are participating in the Bremen exhibition, together with the five HfK students Alexander Schröter, Jamie Yzabel Santos, Jisu Kim, Mohar Kalra and Renen. Further contributions of the Hanoi group come from invited artists Gemini Kim (Seoul) and Hwayong Kim (Seoul), Yuhei Higashikata (Hokkaido), Akosua Viktoria Adu-Sanyah (Zurich), the curators Moon-Seok Yi (Seoul), Burkhard Melzer (Bern), Jieon Lee (Seoul) and the Vietnamese artists Ngô Đình Bảo Châu (Ho Chi Minh City), Hoàng Anh Nguyễn (Danang), Sarah Morag (Ho Chi Minh City), Nguyễn Vũ Hải (Hanoi). The project is led by Nguyễn Anh Tuấn (Heritage Space Hanoi) and Ingo Vetter (HfK Bremen).

Italian Film Festival

The Embassy of Italy in Hanoi proudly introduces the “Italian Film Festival 2023” at the National Cinema Centre (87 Lang Ha, Ba Dinh, Hanoi) from November 27 to December 02, 2023.

The event is organised in coordination with the Asian Film Festival in Rome, aiming to offer Vietnamese audiences a glimpse into Italy’s contemporary cinema. Through six outstanding films spanning from drama to comedy, of which many have won accolades at prestigious festivals, Italian Film Festival 2023 will tell the tales of urban life, depicting the Italian modern society in the face of new challenges while also trying to connect with and maintain its age-old traditional heritage.

Tickets will be distributed free of charge for audiences who register in advance through the fanpage of the Italian Film Festival. The organising team will soon open the registration form for the audiences to fill in and receive the guidelines to get their tickets at Casa Italia, 18 Le Phung Hieu from November 21 until tickets are all distributed.

“The Language of Water” is the statement of Nicolás López’s characteristic painting technique and the title he chose for his series of personal exhibitions and workshops in many countries worldwide. Watercolor works tell the inner spiritual stories of indigenous people and cultures, exploring the diversity of the world through artistic journeys from Peru to Europe, Asia, and now to Vietnam.
