VietNamNet Bridge – Mr. Nguyen Van Cung, 86 years old--a beggar in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, saved each penny to buy gold for decades and always took the gold with him. But all of his gold was robbed on the evening of December 21.

That night, Tam Nong district police was informed of a robbery at a market in Tram Chim town. The victim was a beggar - Mr. Nguyen Van Cung, 86.

At the police station, the elderly beggar said that that night, he slept at the market. While he was sleeping, a group of people approached him, used force to take off his clothes to robbed 25 taels of gold and then ran away.

25 taels of gold are worth over $35,000.

Previously, the beggar lived with his nephew but due to family conflict, he left home and became a beggar. He often begged for a living at markets in Dong Thap. All the money he saved he used to buy gold. He always took the gold with him.

On December 26, Tam Nong district police arrested the robbers. They are four young men in Tram Chim town and a man from Tam Nong district. The police recovered some gold and over VND29 million ($1,400) in cash from these men to return to the rich beggar.
