On December 2, a woman from Long An province, came to the HCM City University of Forestry and Agriculture to ask for information about her son, a fourth-year student majoring in information technology.

“I sometimes think that students follow university education just because they try to avoid military service, or because they just try to do what their parents tell them to do. They don’t understand why they need to study,”

The son had not returned to his rented room for three weeks. She was told that he was going to school but his marks were bad and he would possibly be suspended. The student had to repeat exams for at least two subjects each semester.

Tran Dinh Ly, head of the training division of the HCM City, confirmed that many students like the woman’s son had been suspended because of their bad learning results.

“There are many reasons behind this. Some of them spend most of their time on extra jobs and don’t have time for learning. Others spend most of their time traveling or playing games,” he said.

Nguyen Anh Duc, head of the students’ affairs division of the HCM City University of Technique Education, noted that fewer students were studying hard to prepare themselves for future jobs, while more students were neglecting their studies.

In 2012, the school forced 275 students to stop going to school. The figure was 249 in 2014, and the number has reached 100 so far. In 2013, 500 students were suspended.

As for the HCM City Food Industry University, 2,000 students were given warnings and forced to stop studying. The HCM City Banking University has nearly 400 students suspended every year.

Nguyen Quoc Anh from the HCM City University of Technology said the school every year has to deal with hundreds of students who are unaware of their tasks of learning. In some cases, the school has to seek help from police to prevent the bad students from engaging other students in bad business.

Trinh Huu Chung, vice president of Hong Bang International University, also noted that the students’ awareness of learning has declined in recent years. Many students go to class not to listen to lectures, but just to gossip with friends.

Chung said the problem is student awareness, not that studies are boring.

“I sometimes think that students follow university education just because they try to avoid military service, or because they just try to do what their parents tell them to do. They don’t understand why they need to study,” he said.
