According to USNews’ rankings of countries with the best educational sector in 2021, Vietnam ranked 59th, up five spots over 2020.

In 2022, Vietnamese students recorded outstanding achievements in Olympiad competitions. Thirty-seven out of 39 students won 12 gold, 11 silver, 9 bronze medals and 5 credits. One member of the national mathematics team got a 42 out of 42 mark at the Mathematics Olympiad.

In 2022, teacher shortages and mass resignations were mentioned by everyone, from people at street tea shops to National Assembly meetings.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), 16,000 teachers resigned in 2022. The main reason was low wages, which are not enough to cover basic needs. Teachers also are under much pressure.

To organize the teaching of foreign languages for third graders as required by the 2018 new general education program in the 2022-2023 academic year and the next two years, 9,000 more teachers are needed, MOET said.

As for informatics, to have at least one teacher of informatics for each school, 3,000 teachers are needed.

Improving facilities, recruiting 65,000 teachers in the 2022-2026 period, including 27,000 teachers at preschools and general schools, and raising base salaries and allowances for teachers are part of MOET's plan, as well as continuing education reform.
