Ninh Thuan is home to 20 irrigation reservoirs with total design capacity of more than 192 million cubic metres. However, the water volume at these reservoirs has dropped to 49 million cu.m, or 24.88 million cu.m less than the level in the same period of previous years.

According to Vice Director of Ninh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Chau Thang Long, the water shortage is expected to have a great influence on the province’s agricultural production plan, which aims to cultivate over 22,900 ha of food crops.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has closely cooperated with other agencies to build drought response plans, giving priority to ensuring water for daily use and drinking water for animals. Rotational irrigation will be applied while local farmers are encouraged to switch to drought resistant crops.
