To Thuy Trang from HCM City's Binh Tan District was hospitalised with a 30cmx30cm noncancerous tumor that developed in front of the breastbone and encompassed the heart.
On November 20, doctors performed the operation to remove the breastbone and replaced it with two titanium sternum.
"A mediastinal tumor is rare but it is a fatal condition due to its location," said Vu Huu Vinh, head of the hospital's thoracic surgery department.
The success rate of the five-hour operation is low due to a high risk of profuse bleeding, according to Vinh.
