A surge in dengue fever cases across Vietnam has led to several fatalities, health officials warned.

Vietnam detected as many as 30,265 dengue infections in the past six months of the year, including three fatalities, down more than 30% in infection numbers and six fatalities fewer than the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Hanoi Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that the Breteau index (BI) has exceeded the threshold in several outbreaks in the capital city, making dengue fever increasingly complicated.

Along with dengue virus types DEN-1 and DEN-2 in circulation, health professionals in Hanoi have recently detected another type of DEN-3 in blood samples of several infected cases throughout the city.

Vietnam will test the efficacy of a Japanese produced vaccine against dengue fever to create immunity for people amid a rising number of dengue infections throughout the country.

Dengue fever cases dropped significantly in Vietnam during the first eight months of this year, but the country needed to remain vigilant as there were currently cases in 58 provinces and cities and the risk of a greater outbreak was extremely high.

Over 330 cases of dengue fever have been detected in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong since the start of the year, with the majority of cases occurring in the districts of Bao Lam, Duc Trong, and Da Teh.
