The municipal People's Committee officially released a report reviewing the planning of Son Tra Peninsula on September 5, which was previously sent to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on August 29.

According to the report, by December 2012, the Da Nang municipal People's Committee had approved 18 tourism and resort projects on a total area of over 1,222 ha which will provide approximately 5,600 hotel rooms.

So far, three projects have been carried out and four projects have been suspended, while 11 projects have yet to be started.

The authorities said that Son Tra Peninsula should be protected and managed by a special mechanism so as to harmonise the relationship between defence, security, biodiversity conservation and development.

The report said that through reviewing the 18 projects, six projects have been found to be not compliant with the mentioned criteria and will be converted into ecotourism, community tourism and non-resident projects, while the scale of 10 other projects will be cut down.

Only two projects will be kept unchanged as they are in line with the above criteria.

The Da Nang authorities also proposed that the Prime Minister continues to regard the Son Tra Peninsula as one of the national tourist areas with a harmony between biological diversity, security, defence and tourism development.

Moreover, the interests of both investors and community must be ensured towards sustainable development.
