VietNamNet Bridge – Police officers in central Da Nang City's Thanh Khe District broke up a sophisticated illegal gambling ring, with authorities detaining 30 gamblers and seizing 14 gambling machines, 900 coins, 13 motorbikes, 16 mobile phones and cash worth VND26 million (US$1,300).
Lieutenant colonel Kieu Van Vuong, who is head of the district's criminal police team, said it was the biggest illegal gambling ring to use sophisticated electronic gambling machines to be uncovered in the city.
He said the owners of the gambling den, which was disguised as a cafe on Ky Dong Street, were fined for illegal gambling with four machines last September. However, the cafe's owners changed the business registration to that of an electronic gaming service.
The lieutenant colonel said the two owners who were a married couple intentionally bought more machines to provide illegal gambling services.
The gambling ring's masterminds, Pham Trung and Nguyen Thi Be, were also captured when they were organising a gambling session for 30 people on Thursday. Police said the gambling ring had attracted students, drug users and criminals.
