The litter which is estimated at around 500 tonnes stretches up to nearly one kilometre on Nguyen Tat Thanh Beach.

Most of the rubbish was from nearby residential areas, including tree branches swept away by strong wind and heavy rains.

The municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment has planned to clean beaches on November 17-22 after rubbish piles on local streets are removed following the typhoon.

Local authorities of coastal districts will mobilise military forces for the cleanup.

The city’s Department of Transport will open three ways to the beach along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street for vehicles to carry out the waste.

Vamco is the latest in a series of storms that have lashed the central region of Vietnam since early October, killing 159 people and leaving 70 others unaccounted for.

Vamco alone has injured 19 people in Vietnam’s central localities and damaged thousands of houses.
