Central provinces from Thua Thien-Hue to Quang Ngai experienced heavy rain on Saturday of up to 167mm.

Prolonged rainfall of 50-100mm is forecast to hit these provinces today, while south-central provinces from Quang Tri to Binh Dinh are likely to see 30-60mm.

Heavy rainfall from December 14-16 inundated the remote, mountainous district of M’Drak in the Central Highlands Province Dak Lak.

A bridge, reservoir and facilities in Krong Jing and Ea Lai communes were submerged under at least 1m of water, while landslides – including one at Doc Cop Pass on National Road 19C – blocked traffic.

Hoa Quang Khiem, chairman of the district People’s Committee, said local search and rescue teams had been deployed.

Provincial authorities have asked the district to come up with plans to relocate locals from low-lying areas near rivers and streams that are at high risk of landslides.

Other localities in the province were also told to ensure people’s safety.

Schools across the central province of Thua Thien-Hue were busy cleaning up over the weekend to prepare for 8,000 students returning today after being forced to stay at home due to the floods.
