The coal price hike in the world market has impacted the domestic market and  coal supply for electricity generation, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT).

In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam spent over $5 billion to import coal for thermal power plants, up 123 per cent on-year.

Domestic coal production is mainly used for electricity production. In 2019, domestic coal for power generation accounted for 76% of total coal output.

Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has said that the amount of coal supplied to its thermal power plants (TPP) fell short of the contractual amounts, putting them at risk.
