Viet Nam and China established a diplomatic relationship on January 18, 1950.

During the last 10 years, China has continually been Viet Nam's largest trade partner, while Viet Nam has become China's second biggest ASEAN trade partner. In 2014, their trade revenue reached US$58.87 billion. A total investment of $7.94 billion in 1,082 projects made China the ninth largest foreign investor in Viet Nam by the end of last year.
