The charge was in compliance with Clause 1, Article 263 of the Penal Code.
According to the indictment, Wu, born in 1981 in China, confided that he entered Vietnam on August 22, 2012 with Hu Zi, also Chinese, as tourists. Wu said he knew Hu on the Internet and learnt from him tricks to steal money from automated teller machines (ATM).
In Hanoi, they installed a device to copy data from the credit cards inserted into an ATM of the DongA Joint Stock Commercial Bank on Truong Chinh Street and then made fake cards to withdraw money. However, the cards they produced failed to work.
On August 28, Hu returned to the ATM site and planted another device for the same ill purpose. The day later, Wu came to strip down the device but was caught red- handed by police.
According to investigators, no one named Hu Zi entered Vietnam on August 22 as Wu said so only Wu got the sentence.
