A Mobile World's store

Closing the July 15 trading session, MWG shares of The Gioi Di Dong (Mobile World) owned by Nguyen Duc Tai fell by VND1,100 per share in price, or 1.8 percent, to VND61,500 per share. Since early July MWG prices have decreased by VND10,000 per share, or 14 percent.

Since Tai directly and indirectly holds 187.5 million MWG shares, if considering the July 15 trading session alone, his assets have fallen by VND206 billion. Meanwhile, his stock assets have decreased by VND1.875 trillion since early July.

As of the end of July 15, stock assets held by Tai were worth VND11.534 trillion.

Investors were surprised by MWG’s decision on shutting down many Bach Hoa Xanh (a brand of MWG) stores. These include stores which opened in late 2021. Most of the stores are located in HCM City.

Closing the July 15 trading session, MSN shares of Masan Group saw the price fall to VND101,200 per share, or 9.6 percent compared with late June. With the decrease, the capitalization value of MSN fell by VND15.4 trillion to VND144 trillion.

In Q1 2022 alone, WinCommerce (WCM), a subsidiary of Masan Group, opened 109 new retail points, becoming the only large-scale chain which had a considerable increase in the number of stores in the first four months of the year.

WCM reported a 0.8 percent increase in Q1 compared with the same period last year and a 5.7 percent increase compared with Q4 2021. With a plan to open 300 new stores in Q2 and expected revenue development at existing sale points, WCM hopes its revenue in Q2 2022 will increase by 6 percent compared with the same period last year.

As for PNJ and FPT Retail, two retailers with a smaller scale, their capitalization value decreased by VND3.6 trillion and VND2.1 trillion, respectively, in the first half of July. However, the drop in percentages are high – 12 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

Only half a month of Q3 has elapsed, but the capitalization value of big retail has dropped sharply, while the entire market has fallen by only 2 percent since late June.

The decreases in capitalization value of leading retailers are going against the growth in total goods and services retail turnover in Vietnam in H1 (+ 11.7 percent).

According to VNDirect, in the first five months of the year, total goods and services retail turnover increased by 8.2 percent compared with the same period last year.
