VietNamNet Bridge – A farmer in the northern mountain province of Cao Bang built a suspension bridge for his family, using timber, bamboo sticks and bamboo strings as materials.

The bridge has been used since 1998 by the family of Mr. Trieu Van Lam, 44. This is the second bridge built by this family. The first was swept away by a flood.

Being afraid that the second bridge would be washed away by floods, Lam used bamboo strings to fix it. He said the bridge would be removed quickly thanks to the use of bamboo strings.

Sometimes Lam checks the bamboo strings to replace broken strings by the new ones.

Lam’s family has 6 people. Their house is located alone on a side of this river for several generations. The family tried their best to have money to build this bridge.

He said the bridge cost VND40 million ($2,000) – a huge amount for the family. He did not have money to hire workers so he built it himself.

This is the unique suspension bridge in Vietnam and in the world.
