On July 23, Besra Vietnam Group suspended production at the two largest gold companies in Vietnam, Bong Mieu and Phuoc Son, in Quang Nam Province.

Prior to that, due to difficulties in the payment of taxes, the Quang Nam Department of Taxation adopted coercive measures to apply on the two companies by freezing their bank accounts and disabling their bills from April 2014. The action left more than 1,000 workers at the two companies jobless.

According to the Quang Nam Department of Taxation, the debts of the two companies are close to VND300 billion (nearly $15 million), including a VND51 billion debt of taxes of the Bong Mieu company, including natural resources taxes, personal income taxes, road protection fees and others.

The Besra Group also said the enforcement order on the Bong Mieu Gold Company has expired. Currently, the Group has had no debt repayment plan and is waiting for the Prime Minister’s decision on tax waivers.
