Speaking before the march at the Square of Luu Huu Phuoc Park, representatives of the Fatherland Front Committee, the Veterans’ Association and the Catholic Solidarity Committee of Can Tho City vehemently protested China’s illegal oil rig placed in the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf of Vietnam.

The Can Tho Fatherland Front Committee called on peace- and justice-loving people worldwide to raise their voices to demand that China respect international law and the lawful sovereignty of Vietnam and to put an end to unilateral actions threatening peace and stability in the region.

Shortly afterwards, more than 2,000 participants marched on Hoa Binh (Peace) Avenue in Ninh Kieu District.

Not only the young but many elderly raised banners: "China setting an oil rig in Vietnam’s waters is a serious violation of the sovereignty and jurisdictional rights of Vietnam," "China must immediately get its oil rig out of Vietnam’s waters,” "Truong Sa and Hoang Sa belong to Vietnam".

The demonstration remained orderly and lasted until evening.
