The southernmost province of Ca Mau plans to build 2,100 metres of sea embankments over the next three months to protect dykes at high risk of erosion.
Nguyen Tien Hai, chairman of the province’s People’s Committee, has directed the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to choose the units who can complete the project on schedule.
The department, which will be provided a fund of 2 billion VND (87,205 USD) for dyke maintenance, will work with localities on reviewing the status of eroded areas and erosion-prone areas.
The new embankments will include a 900m-long section on southern Da Bac Island in Tran Van Thoi district’s Khanh Binh Tay commune, and other sections totaling a length of 1,200m in Tran Van Thoi district’s Khanh Binh Tay and Khanh Hai communes.
Erosion has occurred along 2km of riverbanks and affected 75 houses in the province.
Natural disasters have caused property damage worth more than 5.6 billion VND (246,000 USD) this year, according to the province’s steering committee for flood and storm control and prevention, natural disaster mitigation, search and rescue.-VNA
