VietNamNet Bridge – A bull that injured four people and killed a man after butting him in the stomach died soon after the incident, possibly because of trauma, scientists have said.

On May 26, a bull weighing hundreds of kilos entered a field in Dai An Hamlet in Dai Lanh Commune of Dai Loc District in the central province of Quang Nam and attacked people.

Phan Tuan, head of the province’s Forest Rangers Unit, told the press that the bull died after the incident, but there was no external cause.

The same conclusion was made by provincial agencies, including the police, procuracy, veterinarians, forest rangers and a group of officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Tuan said central agencies were investigating why the bull died. The Vietnam Museum of the Nature, a unit of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, is responsible for the investigation.

Shortly after hearing about the bull, the museum’s board of management sent a document to Quang Nam provincial authorities, asking for permission to receive the body of the bull.

The dead bull was taken to Hanoi on May 27 after local authorities agreed to the proposal.

Tuan said that the male bull had turned up in the area once or twice a month in Dong Giang District.

Images in video clips filmed by local people with their smartphones made them think that the bull was “good natured”. However, the bull would unexpectedly become aggressive, and seemed to be ready to attack people at any time.

“This is because bulls are in season now. Meanwhile, the male bull could not find a partner,” Tuan said.

A local resident surmised that the bull had become aggressive after seeing many people around it, thinking that it needed to protect itself.

The bull was believed to travel a long distance from Dong Giang District to Dai Loc District. In the forest, a more natural habitat, it would see few people in contrast to the town, which is full of people, houses and working fields.

Tuan said that the appearance of the bull drew special attention from curious locals, who gathered in big crowds. This might have frightened the bull and caused its death, he said.

The appearance of the bull in the central province of Quang Nam was a surprise to scientists and local people.

Until the day the bull appeared in Dong Giang District, there had been no reports of bulls living in the province.

The pictures local people had taken of a “bull-like subject” in Dong Giang from a long distance were not clear enough to affirm that it was a bull.

The Quang Nam Forest Rangers Unit has sent films of the bull to the Vietnam Forestry Science Institute for further research.
