Blockbuster The Tunnel by director Bui Thac Chuyen has taken Vietnam’s box office by storm, earning VND 127 billion (approximately USD 5 million) just 10 days after its release, far outpacing newly released competitors.

In its second week in theaters, The Tunnel continues to dominate. Over the recent weekend alone, the film grossed more than VND 27 billion (approx. USD 1.06 million) with nearly 300,000 tickets sold, bringing its cumulative earnings to VND 127 billion. This achievement makes it the highest-grossing Vietnamese war film to date.
Positive audience feedback and strong media reviews have helped The Tunnel maintain its momentum in theaters, outperforming all rivals at the box office. With a production cost of VND 55 billion (USD 2.15 million), the film has already broken even when accounting for the approximate 50% revenue share that goes to cinema chains.
Trailing far behind in second place is Ghost Wedding to Lift the Curse, an 18+ Thai horror-comedy exploring LGBTQ themes. The film earned VND 15 billion (approx. USD 595,000) over the weekend, according to Box Office Vietnam. Including early screenings, its total revenue remains under VND 20 billion (USD 794,000), a distant second to The Tunnel.
In third place is the Hollywood game adaptation Minecraft, featuring big-name stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black. The film brought in VND 4.4 billion (USD 175,000) over the weekend, with a total of VND 18.5 billion (USD 735,000) after 10 days in Vietnamese cinemas. Despite its global success - surpassing USD 500 million in worldwide box office revenue - Minecraft has underperformed locally.
Another new release, Panor: Blood Sorcery, opened with just VND 2.5 billion (USD 99,000), placing fourth. Rounding out the top five is Undercover Bricklayer, which earned VND 1.3 billion (USD 52,000).
Box office analysts predict that this coming weekend will see little change in rankings, as The Tunnel enjoys exclusive dominance for at least another 10 days - until the premieres of Detective Kien and Face Off 8.
