ASEAN University Games - Thuy wins a pencal silat bronze

Dinh Thi Thuy won a pencak silat bronze medal at the ongoing ASEAN University Games in Indonesia.

Thuy defeated Noor Amirah of Singapore with a final score of 5 – 0 in the women's Class E (65 – 70kg) match for the third place this morning at the Graha Serbaguna Jakabaring Stadium in Palembang.

The Vietnamese athletes are expected to win more medals from other sports competitions, including swimming and table tennis.

At present, Viet Nam has won 23 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals. They are currently at fourth place in the competition.

The top three countries are Indonesia (48 golds), Thailand (43 golds) and Malaysia (30 golds).

The games will wrap up on Sunday.

Golfers to tee off at HCM City Open next month

The first HCM City Golf Open will be held on January 17-18.

Sponsored by the Saigon Golf Association, the event has lured nearly 290 participants who will compete, based on their handicap points, in

numerous categories, including the Men's Open, The King, The Bear, The Shark, and Ladies' Open.

Athletes in the four latter classes will play on January 18, while the remaining golfers will compete in a two-day competition.

The winners of the tournament will receive a number of prizes, including a wildcard to take part in next year's tournament.

According to Andrew Hung Pham, the Open's executive director, organisers have planned to make the tournament an annual international event with, in the future, the participation of foreigners.

Runners on their marks for 18th Da Nang Marathon

Nearly 790 athletes will compete in the annual Da Nang Marathon tomorrow at the East Sea Park for total cash prizes of VND75 million (US$3,600).

Professional athletes will race in the men's 7km and women's 5km events, while amateur runners will run in the men's 7km and women's 4km along Pham Van Dong Street.

There are separate divisions for soldiers, police, students, juniors and youngsters.

The organising committee will also donate scholarships for underprivileged students at the race.
