Bamboo Airways has reached an agreement to end the leasing contract of three Embraer E190 airplanes for flights to Con Dao by late March with their partner. This means that its Hanoi-Con Dao route will be halted.
The announcement of the only flight operator to the southern tourist island has led to many people trying to have a ticket before the service concludes.
Nguyen Van Minh from Hanoi's Dong Da District said that his family planned to visit Con Dao in April but now had to move the date to mid-March.
"I'm trying to book a direct flight, but it seems difficult as many flights have run out of tickets," he said.
Searching on Bamboo Airlines' online booking site on February 26, there were no tickets left for that day direct Hanoi-Con Dao flights, while those who go on February 29 can only choose from transfer flights between Hanoi-Can Tho-Con Dao which take seven hours and tickets amounting VND5.70 million.
According to an air ticket agent in Hanoi's Hoang Mai District, the Hanoi-Con Dao air route is usually crowded, and passengers need to book some two weeks in advance to have good prices.
"Demand on the Hanoi-Con Dao route may be even higher in March as many tourists are changing their flight schedules to this month for a direct flight," the agent said.
It is expected that more airlines will reopen flights from Hanoi to Con Dao when Con Dao Airport is upgraded to receive wide-body aircraft.
