Thu Duc District officials awarded certificates of merit to 25-year-old Duong Minh Quang, from Lam Dong Province, 25-year-old Bui Van Tien, from Binh Phuoc Province, and 24-year-old Nguyen Son Tung, from Binh Dinh Province, at a ceremony on Tuesday.
Nguyen Manh Cuong, secretary of the district’s Party Committee, commended the men for their courage in protecting other people’s assets and for helping ensure order and security in the locality.
At around 9pm on Monday, two men on Dream motorbikes snatched Tung’s mobile phone while the three bank employees were driving on To Ngoc Van Street.
The men shouted for help and chased the two suspects, who were later identified as Tran Ngoc Danh and Le Minh Vu Nghia, both from Long An Province. The pursuit spanned over two kilometres and ended when Quang, Tien, and Tung approached the suspects and kicked them off their motorbike. Danh tried to escape to a nearby alley, while his accomplice tried to attack the three with a knife. Both suspects were later arrested by the police and local residents.
After the incident, Tung was taken to the Thu Duc Hospital for emergency treatment on an injury to the main artery in his left hand and a wound in his right hand. Tien and Quang suffered minor injuries.
The two suspects told police that they attempted the robbery because they did not have any money.
Danh and Nghia were taken into custody for investigation on charges of "robbery of property" and "intentionally causing injuries".
A mobile phone, two knives, and a motorbike were also seized by police for use as evidence.
