Bac Kan province currently has a total of 64 markets, including one 1st class market, 4 2nd class markets and 59 3rd class markets.

This is part of the National Target Program for Promoting Socio-economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas in the period 2021 – 2025, Subproject 1 of Project 4 entitled "Investment in construction and renovation, upgrade of the market network in ethnic minority and mountainous areas".

Under the 2023 plan, Bac Kan province has built Quang Phong commune market in Na Ri district and renovated Tinh Yen Han commune market in Cho Moi district with a cost of more than VND8 billions.

According to the Construction Investment Project Management Board of Bac Kan province, it was assigned to renovate and upgrade 6 markets under the National Target Program for Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas with a total capital of over VND18 billion. The 2022 projects have completed over 90% of the volume, while the 2023 projects are being implemented to ensure the right progress.

In 2022, Bac Kan province kicked off the construction of two markets - Hiep Luc commune market in Ngan Son district and Cong Bang commune market in Pac Nam district and renovation of two markets - Bang Thanh commune market in Pac Nam district and Thuan Mang commune market in Ngan Son district with a total capital of more than VND10 billion.

These four projects have been completed and put into use, basically meeting the people's needs for trading and exchanging goods.

Bac Kan province currently has a total of 64 markets, including one 1st class market, 4 2nd class markets and 59 3rd class markets. In general, these markets have well operated, helping local people consume their products as well as basically satisfying the people's needs for buying, selling, exchanging goods.

Bac Kan province prioritizes investment in upgrading markets that are operating but have degraded and overloaded facilities that need to be renovated or rebuilt to meet the needs of exchange and buying, selling goods from ethnic minority and mountainous areas, without the ability to call for investment from society.

As Bac Kan’s socio-economic conditions are still difficult and the proportion of ethnic minorities in the province is large, developing markets in mountainous, remote, and ethnic minority areas is important, suitable to the needs of local socio-economic development; contributing to perfecting the province's commercial infrastructure system in a civilized and modern direction.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Kan province, the capital for building and upgrading markets mainly came from the state budget and it was only invested in main items. Most of the auxiliary works have not been invested in or have been invested but have degraded, damaged and cannot be used such as: Walls, toilets, wastewater drainage systems, electricity and water systems, market floor...

The lack of public toilets, garbage collection and waste treatment sites cause environmental pollution, degraded facilities, problems of commercial civilization, security and order and fire prevention at markets.
