The Bui Thi Xuan High School in Hue City

Four schoolgirls of the Tran Phu Secondary School in Hue City brutally beat NTHH, a seventh grader in January 2016.

The video clip on Facebook showed that the female students shouted and scolded with extremely vulgar words when kicking the body and face of the victim.

Nguyen Dung, deputy chair of the Thua Thien-Hue provincial People’s Committee, then released an urgent document requesting the education department and local authorities to strengthen the management over schools and intensify moral education.

Just one month later, on February 18, NTTN, a 10th grader of the Bui Thi Xuan High School in Hue City, when going out of the school after the third learning period, was attacked by five to six female students.

Many teachers complain that the job is especially hard: they are criticized if they punish students when students go wrong.
N was ‘punished’ by students because she accidentally dropped water on the foot of another schoolgirl at a street food shop.

Even when N was hit onto the ground, the female students still continued pulling N’s hair, and punched and kicked N.

A lot of people stood around watching the fight, but nobody tried to dissuade them. Some of the people even filmed the fight.

D, a local man, said he tried to dissuade them, but he was prevented by female students, who even tried to grab his camera. They only stopped fighting when D shouted ‘The Police!’

Meanwhile, the Bui Thi Xuan High School’s Board of Management said that the fight occurred outside the school and it could not stop the fight because it was not informed about the case.

More and more school violence cases have been reported recently.

“Why does it last for so long?” asked Nguyen Tung Lam, a renowned educator, headmaster of Dinh Tien Hoang High School in Hanoi.

Lam said that it was not easy to stop school violence, but it was a possible mission.

“Families need to keep an eye on their children instead of relying on school,” Lam said.

Nguyen Van Khanh, a teacher from An Giang province, commented that students nowadays do not spend much time on learning, but spend time on playing and making a fuss.

He also pointed out that parents tend to overindulge children, and spoil them. And that this was the reason behind the increased school violence.

A high school teacher in Hanoi complained that it was difficult to work as a teacher.

“When you punish students for their faults, you will be criticized by society,” he said.

“You’d better turn a blind eye to naughty students, or you will be disciplined yourself,” he said.
