VietNamNet Bridge – Three national anti-corruption hotlines that were created for the public to report corruption have already received more than 200 calls since they were publicised on December 13, said the Head of Government Inspectorate Anti-corruption Bureau Pham Trong Dat.

Dat said one-third of the calls to 08048228, 0902386999 and 01256986688 were able to provide the authority with credible evidence, which was sufficient for the bureau to start investigations.

The majority of the calls were made to report corruption issues in local government bodies on district and commune levels.

A large number of calls were about land management, land compensation policies and abuse of an office's power, which falls under the local authority's jurisdiction, revealing it was likely that citizens were not satisfied with the manner said issues were handled by local authorities and chose to call the hotlines instead.

Many calls were also made to report incidents in which traffic police officers had allegedly accepted bribes from vehicle owners, according to the anti-corruption bureau head.

He noted that the bureau would start to handle their own investigations for cases under their jurisdiction. Other cases would be transferred to other Government agencies.

With Tet – the country's most celebrated holiday to be held in early February next year – just around the corner, the hotline is expecting many more calls as Tet has always been associated with gift-giving and misuse of official cars for personal purposes.

The bureau considered the hotlines to be an important channel for citizens to provide the Government's anti-corruption force with information and intelligence.
