The patient, who lived in Ngoc Lac District, was hospitalised on March 16, suffering respiratory failure and serious lung infection.

She had received intensive care, including respirator support until April 23. Her health worsened and the family then asked the hospital to bring her home. The patient died at home.

Ha Ngoc Minh, director of the Ngoc Lac District medical centre, said health workers have kept monitoring those who contacted the patient.

Doctor Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy director of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said seasonal flu, including A/H1N1, could be as dangerous as bird flu strains A/H5N1 and A/H7N9.

He advised people to wash their hands with soap and safe water, maintain a healthy diet, and frequently do physical exercises to increase the body’s resistance against infection.
