Anh Vien falls short in individual medley at FINA World Championship
This result left her 10.77 seconds behind the Hungarian athlete Katina Hosszu in first place.
Among the 36 athletes competing, Vien finished 26th in the rankings.
Due to the disappointing results, the Vietnamese swimmer failed to make the cut to move onto the semifinals.
Vien’s performance during the 200 m individual medley event this year was also slower than her personal best which she achieved at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
During the 2017 competition she was able to beat two Chinese rivals to win the gold medal with a time of 2 minutes 09.78 seconds.
This year, Vien competed in three events at the 18th FINA World Championship. Of the event’s, she had the highest hopes going into the 400 individual medley.
The Can Tho native is the nation’s most successful swimmer after winning a total of 19 golds, seven silvers, and two bronze medals in her career.
In addition, she has also broken 11 SEA Games records. The 23-year-old swimmer has won two bronze medals at the Asian Games as well as a silver, and two bronze medals during previous FINA World Cup competitions.
Tran Duc Phan, deputy director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, noted that Vien remains a key member of the Vietnamese swimming team that will compete in the SEA Games.
She has set a target of winning eight gold medals during the tournament.
