VietNamNet Bridge – Amateur cyclist Nguyen Van Huong of Team 5 Gau A Luot-Long Xuyen won the second stage of the Cycling to the Countryside Tournament yesterday, May 14.

Perfect runaway: Amateur cyclist Nguyen Van Huong causes a surprise by overcoming professional riders to win the second stage of the Cycling to the Countryside Tour.

 

The stage consisted of a 113km stretch from Cao Lanh City to Vinh Hung District in Long An Province. Huong claimed the yellow jersey in a time of 2hr 52.11min.

Another amateur, Le Tan Lai of Nguyen Dung-Chau Phu, finished second and Ha Thanh Tam of Vinh Binh Rice-An Giang was third.

Huong and Lai led the pack for more than 100km before making a perfect run-away at the 112km mark.

Huong finally overtook Lai in the dying seconds to secure his first stage win.

Despite his third-place finish, Tam, the only professional racer in the stage's top three, could only take second position in the overall rankings for the tour. Huynh Thanh Tung from the Military Zone 7 team maintained his top place ranking and the yellow jersey for professionals after finishing fourth yesterday.

Nguyen Ngoc Tuoi of Domesco Dong Thap Pharmacy is third overall.

Tung is also leading the race to be named best racer with 44 points. Tam with 22 points, is again his runner-up.

In the team rankings, Vinh Binh Rice jumped to the top after clocking 11:12.12. Vinh Long and Military Zone 7 were second and third, respectively.

Today cyclists will tour 128km from Moc Hoa District in Long An Province to Can Tho City.
