At their trial on Monday (Jan 20), Le Thi Dong Phuong, 32, and Nguyen Le Thien Ly, 20, were also ordered to pay to parents the cost of medical care for their babies and damages for the psychological damage they caused to the children.

Both have been sentenced to three years in jail by the district People's Court.

At their trial on Monday (Jan 20), Le Thi Dong Phuong, 32, and Nguyen Le Thien Ly, 20, were also ordered to pay to parents the cost of medical care for their babies and damages for the psychological damage they caused to the children.

The court found the caregivers guilty of brutally beating babies while feeding them and holding one of them upside down over a barrel of water and threatening to drop him into it.

The Hiep Binh Phuoc ward police in Thu Duc had received a video clip showing Phuong, the owner of Phuong Anh kindergarten at 18 Hiep Binh Street, treating the infants brutally. When the clip was shown on TV news, it caused a public outcry across the country.

They summoned Phuong, Ly, and the kindergarten's cook, Nguyen Thi Dieu, for questioning and asked the children's families to take them for medical checks.

There were 19 babies when the scandal erupted.

Police said Phuong opened the kindergarten in September 2012, but does not have a licence.

On 15 November the People's Committee of Hiep Binh Phuoc ward inspected the place and fined it for operating without a licence.

In related news, the HCM City police has sought the prosecution of 19-year-old babysitter Ho Ngoc Nho for murder. They said that in July 2013 Nho began to care for the 18-month-old baby of Vo Thi Huyen at her own house in Thu Duc District's Linh Trung Ward.

On 16 November she held the baby by his legs and dropped him on the floor because he cried while being fed. She also stomped him on his chest and belly. The child died instantly.
