The Divino café on Ly Tu Trong Street in Hai Chau District displays documents and photos that promote a sense of morality.

Coming to Divino, guests will see on each table a message which reads: “We sincerely thank you for your support as it contributes a great part in our mission to help orphaned children, and disabled and old people. We use most of our income for charity. We wish you a day as good as what you do.”

The coffee shop is owned by Tran Huu Tien, a Vietnamese-American man, and is managed by his brother-in-law Dinh Hoang Tan.

Tan said on the first and fifteenth day of every lunar month, staff at the café and other volunteers will cook 350-400 vegetarian meals for poor people in the area who are mostly cyclo riders, scrap collectors, lottery ticket sellers and xe om (motorbike taxi) drivers.

Le Thi Thiep, a lottery ticket seller in Thanh Khe District, said the café’s owner always extends a warm welcome to her and other poor people who have lunch at the shop.

“After having free meals at the café for more than a year, I have saved quite a large sum to buy books for my kid,” she said.

Another lottery ticket seller, Le Thi Loi, said she always stop by the café for lunch on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month. For Loi, the café is like a luxury restaurant which serves delicious food.
