This morning (March 19), the 115 People's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that the Urology and Nephrology Center had successfully performed emergency surgery on the patient, who suffered a rare and severe testicular injury.
The incident occurred two weeks ago (March 5) while the man was asleep. His son, playing nearby, accidentally hit his left groin with a wooden toy. Initially, the patient managed the pain with over-the-counter medication, but his condition did not improve.
Two days later, he was admitted to the hospital with significant swelling, bruising, and pain in his left groin and scrotum. Doctors performed a Doppler ultrasound, revealing a testicular rupture, and immediately scheduled him for exploratory surgery.
Surgical intervention and recovery
During the operation, surgeons found that the patient’s left testicle had been completely split in two, with surrounding blood clots. The surgical team removed the clotted blood, sutured the protective outer layer of the testicle, and inserted a drainage system to aid recovery.
After five days of hospitalization, the patient made a full recovery and was discharged.
Dr. Tran Thanh Phong, Deputy Head of the Department of Urology and Kidney Transplantation at 115 People's Hospital, explained that testicular rupture is a medical emergency occurring when the protective outer shell of the testicle tears, typically due to direct trauma.
Scrotal injuries are relatively rare, accounting for less than 1% of all trauma cases. However, direct impact is responsible for approximately 50% of testicular injuries, with common causes including sports activities, motorcycle accidents, and other daily incidents.
Potential complications and prevention
Dr. Phong warned that if left untreated, testicular rupture could lead to severe complications such as testicular atrophy or infections. In extreme cases, surgical removal of the affected testicle may be necessary, potentially impacting fertility and overall health.
To prevent such injuries, men are advised to take protective measures, including wearing appropriate gear during high-impact sports and being cautious in daily activities to avoid accidental trauma to the groin. Seeking immediate medical attention after a scrotal injury is crucial to prevent long-term damage.
