On February 4, the Vinh Thai Commune Police in Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province, announced that they had completed and publicly shared the donation records of 559 benefactors who contributed over $6,500 to support a struggling woman in their community.

A lost Tet savings sparks overwhelming kindness

On the afternoon of January 27 (the 28th day of the lunar calendar), Le Thi Thanh Thuy, a resident of Vinh Thai Commune, found a package containing $60.

The money was wrapped in a torn piece of school notebook paper, with handwritten notes listing items for Tet shopping: “bananas + betel nut” and “vegetables + 10kg of sticky rice.” Recognizing the significance of the lost money, Thuy reported it to local authorities to help find the rightful owner.

After an investigation, the Vinh Thai Commune Police identified the owner as 54-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoa, a resident of the area.

Hoa explained that she had lost the money while buying candies and visiting a cemetery to pay respects to her ancestors.

Coming from a financially difficult background, she had been saving this money for essential Tet supplies.

A wave of generosity from 559 donors

Upon learning of Hoa’s hardship, the Vinh Thai Commune Police shared her story on their social media page. The post quickly gained attention, and numerous benefactors expressed their willingness to help.

Donations were sent via the bank account of Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh, Chief of the Vinh Thai Commune Police.

At the start of the workweek following the Lunar New Year holiday, Captain Hoang Ngoc Minh publicly disclosed the donation records, listing the 559 benefactors who contributed amounts ranging from $1.20 to $120, collectively raising more than $6,500.

With this generous support, the Vinh Thai Commune Police, in coordination with local authorities and Hoa’s family, will ensure the funds are used wisely to improve her living conditions.
