According to the result of the draw unveiled in Kuala Lumpur on December 15, Vietnam will play defending champions Japan, second runners-up Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and 2006 champions China.
There is a slim hope for Vietnam, because the three other teams are Asian powerhouses. At the recent 19th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Hangzhou, China, Japan easily outperformed Vietnam though they used many U20 players, and then took the trophy.
Meanwhile, China, despite a decline in strength, remain capable of competing with Japan and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to get one of the two tickets of the group to qualify for the 2024 FIFA U20 women’s World Cup in Colombia.
In the other group, hosts Uzbekistan will play the Republic of Korea, Australia and Chinese Taipei.
A total of eight teams will compete at the 11th U20 Women’s Asian Cup due to take place in Uzbekistan from March 3 to 16.
The top four teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia as the AFC representatives.
