VietNamNet Bridge – Around 15,000 inmates are expected to be released ahead of their prison terms during this year’s National Day holiday.

The Central Council for Amnesty Consultation met in Hanoi on August 19 to consider the list of candidates eligible for parole this year.

Beneficiaries are those who have shown repentance for their crimes and performed well during their prison terms.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, head of the council, said special amnesty demonstrates the Party and State’s lenient and humanitarian policy for prison inmates, encouraging them to work hard and become useful citizens in society.

He said the appraisal process must be conducted in a strict, democratic, open and lawful manner to ensure the fairness of the parole.

He proposed relevant agencies pay more attention to post-amnesty, including education and vocational training services, helping the released quickly reintegrate into society.

The Government has issued a decree on enhancing information dissemination and raising public awareness and responsibility to eliminate discrimination and stigma against the released.

Since 2009, the State has granted early amnesty to more than 48,000 prison inmates. The special amnesty programme has been highly acclaimed domestically and internationally. It has proved efficient as the relapse rate is less than 1%.
